Got out lastnight
« on: Dec 14, 2016, 07:08 AM »

Found a lake in Northern Kent County last night that I was able to get out and fish on .    There was three inches of white honeycomb .  I had a inflatable queen size air mattress to keep me off the ice and my sons wave board to use as a extra floatation device but the ice held up great and will only get better .

That's great!  How was the fishing?

Jake - I doubt he will disclose that as it doesn't sounds very solid and probably doesn't need 50 guys blowing it up.

I am trying my best to be patient the next few days and perhaps by the weekend we will have more fishable ice.  I have been patiently waiting but have gotten a few confirmed reports from friends that I do/have fished with:  1 in Calhoun, 2 in clare, 1 misaukee, 1 Montcalm, and 1 Mecosta co.    Reports were from 1.5-4" of white/mix ice.  A lot of other rumors/posts floating around.  I am still seeing open water or shelf ice at best here in Ottawa/Kent Co. but a few miles can make a big difference.  If I don't have too much work to do this weekend, I may be heading out Sunday morning, perhaps 1-2 hours North of town to check things out.

yeah in waiting..2 or 3 inches of white snow ice which is the weakest form of ice is asking for a cold dunk.

I understand not giving the lake name, just looking for a more specific area.  Trying to figure out how far north I need to go, Kent Co. is a long county.  I know there are lakes in Wexford & Traverse counties, but not sure I will be able to get that far north this weekend.

Classic! I actually spit out my sandwich reading this thread. Finding good first ice takes time. And intelligence. Stay frosty my friends.

Was that lake nunya by the nunya dam
If it passes the ruler test, put it in the ice chest. Hook it and cook it.

I don't even own a fish finder...I didn't realize I was wasting my time all these years ;D Just kidding...I know they are helpful...but definitely not necessary to catch fish in most situations.

Thanks for the intel, swidnica, that helps.  Good to know I could stay that close.  I have heard a report there is some ice on a couple Rockford lakes too.  After the cold tonight I'm sure most them will be walkable.  Happy hunting everyone.

I do agree but my situation was that it was 4 A.M. , it was very cold , the ice was not the safest even though I had a blow up mattress to use as a raft and I brought along some moonshine  , just wanted to try real quick with minimal moving around  .    I hope to get out on my favorite lake this afternoon if the ice is safe and getting some perch .

Hahaha, not trying to bash you at all for trying, but the story keeps getting funnier by the post. First it was a air mattress and a wave board, now we have the moonshine too! Sounds like a day of tubing down the mighty Muskegon LOL!

Went to the same lake and landed 10 crappies and lost three ,  4 to 5 inches of white ice .    you know you found a honey hole if you know you will have a bite when your taking a leak .

Quoting my own quote! Just saw the 6-10" snow in the forcast for Sat/Sat night. Please God, let this one go around us!
