Sideways Transducer for looking for fish around you
« on: Oct 06, 2016, 04:21 PM »
This topic may have been covered but I really didnt know what to search.  Have any of you tried a boat fishfinder mounting the trasnducer to look around you under the ice instead of pointing it down.  Would it work?  I have a piranhamax fishfinder I am not using and thought about trying this.  Just looking for any input or if anyone has tried it...

I recall seeing someone make a transducer Holder out of pvc using a 45 degree elbow on the end. Then you could rotate the pvc pipe and see to the side. Same effect add the beam bender. I don't have a link to it though.

You could always lower the transducer and "swing" the transducer around in the hole

I use a Humminbird Fishingbuddy with the "Sidefinder" technology - and as long as the ice isn't more than ~10-12" deep I spin it around the hole to check for fish. It works pretty well. Obviously this won't tell me how deep they are, but it has given me an idea as to distance and from there I know where to drill more holes.

If I had to guess - I'd say it's been 50% accurate/productive for me. Which is a whole lot better than blind drilling any day.

http://sportsmensdirect.com/shop/Sonic%20Ice%20Hopper/ice-hopper-circle-scan/

Circle scan attachment for the end of any suitable pole. Adjust the angle, stuff it down the hole & rotate.
