Dead bait and you will get x2 the action it's winter pike are lazy I look at it like this a live bait is a raw steam and a dead bait is a cooked one what would you rather eat

Dead bait on sabb is always the way too go. I'll give my secret away. Buy shiners or suckers whatever your preference. Kill them and bag then a couple days before going. Add salt to the bag to get the stank flowing. Make sure your bring some sort of latex glove when using because they will be soft and stankyyyyy!!! Good luck and tight lines.

I've got a bunch of dead mackerel in the freezer from last summer. Too bad I can't use that
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except I get to kill something.

Mackerel aren't legal bait fish for fresh water in Maine. Might want to be more careful and not advertise breaking the law on the internet  ;)

Mackerel should be legal, don't see how a chunk of dead mackerel would hurt anything. And wardens aren't too picky bout trash ponds

Lots of things should be legal, but the law book is very specific on what is legal bait fish to use.
If the warden isn't enforcing the law equally everywhere then that's another problem.
One man's trash fish pond is anothers Honey Hole.
Myself I'd rather have a chance at catching a 40" fish than a bunch of tank scrubbers any day.

The thing is Pike are invasive, bass are invasive, and we aren't paying wardens to protect invasive fish. And these fish are tough as nails and multiply in numbers at very high rates. They protect themselves. And I agree a 40 inch pike is very much more exciting to catch than a tank scrubber brookie but that doesn't mean pike are a good thing to have in Maine's waters.

Wardens are paid to enforce all the laws the same for everyone. Even the ones you don't like.

Wardens focus on trout and salmon lakes a lot more than trash ponds. Ask anyone, it's just common sense.

It's the "I'm above the law" attitude that people from away have brought here that ruins it for all us Native Mainers.

Not sure if your referring to me but I'm talking about trash ponds and especially pike and bass ponds. There's nothing "Native Maine" about those fish. And your response really has nothing to do with what I said. Also I'm about as native Maine as you can get. My great something grandfather was fighting the Indians down in York Before American was even a country. My mother is from parsonsfield and her family has lived in Maine since forever. She's also part Maine Native American which makes me part Maine Native American.

What the ice conditions are now and what they will be after this weeks rain and warmth will be far different. The last rain we had opened up the shore so thinking that may happen again. Not much snow left on surface after the past days warmth. If it gets cold after the rain bring your skates.... cause you will need something to do.
