I ordered the berkley kit thanks to Millbury Man for 6.95 from Berkley and you get the crimping tool and 50 #3 crimps.

The crimps are dependent on the size of the line your using. It may be pricier to but just the tool and the right size crimps separate.

You're going to have to do some research man. Different brand lines are different sizes, as well as different brand crimps can be different sizes. Look at the spool of line you want to use, get the diameter of the line, and get the size crimp that fits it.

what Matt said! The kit comes with a pack of silver sleeves. I just buy black in the same size, 15-45 lb line. I use 30# fluro and have never had a failure .

I've only ever used fluro with them. 20#, 30# (I use 30# now) I use the notch closest to the tip. I squeeze it I think 3 times to cover end to end on the sleeve and use 2 hands to get the tightest squeeze. Leaving a small loop for the hook to move freely (that part is debatable) I prefer free motion with my hook and bait ,octopus hooks Gamakatsu 2/0-4/0 depending on bait size. Occasionally a 5/0 with the super suckers.

Keith is the crimp daddy. Take his advice.

Keiths crimp hand is strong. If he isnt damaging the line using two hands, im sure you have nothing to worry about.

ash if you come out this weekend ill hook you up with a few to try....the key is get florocarbon leader material, not just florocarbon. leader material comes in much shorter lengths but is expensive...

plus the leader material stays straighter unlike fluro line you put on a rod&reel. I use Seagur (spelling?)

I am there! I will walk on ice cubes if needed...

Thanks, I did not realize they were that different. I will need to read up more I guess.

I just got the regular fluoro line since they were cheaper and I didn't see any difference :|

AFW crimps for me.  Do not trust berkley on something that crucial.

The real answer is yes you can damage the line, specifically floro which can crease and fold unlike mono that stays round.  All that said, you'd have to be paying little attention to what you are doing to mess it up.

Assuming you are interested in crimping heavy floro for toothie use I strongly recommend light wire instead.  I use 25# nylon coated steal.  Even the larry's love it and 18 millbillys could never overcrimp the stuff.

Agreed on that, very interesting and talk about keeping things simple. Going to have to try it as well.
