hauling flip over ON atv.
« on: Dec 20, 2015, 03:16 PM »
I have always been a fan of hauling my atv in the back of my truck with my 1 man clam strapped to the rear rack. Worked great as I didn't have to deal with a trailer all the time and when I got to the lake my shack and auger are already solidly on my atv so I can take off and cruise a lot faster instead of dragging my shack at 10mph. A lot of times I cruise at 30-40mph to my spot. Anyways I bought a new ATV and the racks are alittle diff so I came up with a cheap rack extension and I can haul my two man on this extension, its a smaller clam 2 man but still a 2 man. Its 3/4 treated plywood held onto the rack with 2 U bolts and 4 wingnuts with nylon inserts. I have outdoor carpeting mounted on the bottom side of the extension to protect my atv rack and the wood on the extension. A total of $25 into this and its solid. I may have to add some angle iron to the edges if the plywood starts to sag. Takes literally in minute to put on and even faster to take off. The 2x4 on top is to put some clearance between the plastic sled and the wingnuts. A few ratchet straps going from the atv rack over the shack and she is rock solid. Just throwing the idea out there, maybe this will help a few guys out maybe someone will have a diff idea.

Put a support bar from the hitch receiver to the end of the plywood, it will increase the stiffness by a long shot and not bend the cargo rack.

With the weight that high and far back I'd be worried about it flipping backwards when going uphill (getting off the ice) especially on bumpy surfaces.

I have been hauling my 1 man shack fully loaded with lp tank heater flashed and all the other gear like this for years. This set up will be alittle further back that just strapped to the rack but never had an issue even driving my rig into the bed of my truck with ramps.

Everyone out here just drags them-

We drag em too once we get out there. On Winnebago sometimes it's a 4 mile ride or more and that takes for ever dragging a shack. Like this I can cruise wayyyy faster to get to the general fishing area

How's the front of your atv set up ? Couldn't see it with the pics.
