We haven't had a permanent shack since the late 90's but the easiest way we found to not have anyone wreck anything was to not bother putting a lock on it. If someone wanted to use it while we weren't on the ice, as long as they replaced the wood in the fire box, no problem. We also were smart enough to not leave anything in it. Worst thing to happen was the door was swinging open in the wind one afternoon when we came out.

I don't think anyone is jumping to conclusions. But your right I have seen it to. What would u do ran7ger if your shack got trashed and you were lucky enough to roll up on he,she, or them as it was happening.? 18 or 48 wouldn't matter to me... if I wasn't out numbered. Lol ;)

Just got back from the lake spent a couple hours on the west shoreline across from the boat launch. No luck tonight as I was wrapping up I noticed a dark grey or black it was kinda dark out full size truck with exhaust stacks kinda loud pulling up to a red and white permy that is out in front of the boat launch. They got out a milled around for awhile then got back in the truck and headed for Evans road they checked out a couple more shacks that I could see then went back to the red and white one in front of the boat launch. I was driving off towards the boat launch and decided to roll up to them they were just getting out of the shack and we're getting back in the truck pretty fast I pulled up and asked them what they were doing and they said looking for somewhere to fish I said at this hour. No response is this your shack I said no he said .is it yours he asked me I said no it's my buddies he live in thode and is on his way here now I called him so stick around for awhile and you can explain your situation to him. Of course I made all this up. He than just took off. Never got a plate number plate was to dirtybut know the truck and what the 3 teenagers look like. Again they said they were looking for somewhere to fish and didn't think it was wrong to just to use someone Else's shack if it was open to do it in. Not sure if the shack was locked before they got there or what I didn't check. And did no see them carry anything out of the shack. They definitely looked sketchy.

Curious what you mean by stacks?  Like the hillbilly version that stick up out of the box vertically? Appreciate that report and will ask the kids around here if they know these guys.

Stacks. Semi exhaust pipes in a truck put there by people who think they are a truck driver but cant drive a standard and have trouble backing up.

Id bet money 1 or all 3 of those guys has something to do with the break ins. People just don't go around checking shacks.

could very well be. they were sure scrambaling for words and excuses when i was asking them a few questions. looking back now i could have done more of a visual like did they have an auger or any fishing equipment with them. maybe a picture of their truck. they did say they were out to fish.? i did say to them that to watch what your doing out here cause there are some people that had their shacks broken into and probably wouldn't be as nice as i am right now. in any case someone to look out for.

Any idea on the make of truck Ripnflutter? I know a couple CO's in S'toon and will give them a heads up too. These guys that are damaging people's property and stealing need to be caught. I don't fish the strap but will pass this on to my friends that do so maybe they can grab a plate number of they see the truck as well. Sounds pretty suspicious to me too, no reason for people to be out there driving around that late. Most of the time those guys are up to no good in my experience....

Ford or dodge... lol sounds lame that I can't remember that but it was dark and I was paying more attention to their movement and actions. But I would know if I see it again.

Yup no worries, thought I'd ask just in case. There aren't too many trucks with those ridiculous exhaust stacks anyways so it should stand out. I'll pass the word on to keep an eye open

The reward has to outway the risk so what can be stolen from an ice shack of value. You'd have to have your head examined if your leaving your electronics in there. So rods and tackle and heaters, and how many rods and heaters can anyone have, even a thief.  Keep an eye on kijiji and the pawn shops for gear.

i agree darren442 but it could also be that the thieves got into some shack one night and found a bottle of hard stuff and that alone could be a reason for these young people to keep coming out for a joy ride out on a lake and start rummaging through locked or unlocked shacks.and anything else is a bonus.so i think its been well established over the last few years not to leave anything of value. those who do and come on here or any other fourm and complain about it consider it a lesson learned. its unfortunate and ridiculous that a person or person,s cant come out to their shanty and enjoy the day with themselves or their family without having to worrie about their investment to a great and relaxing sport.

Well said rip flutter. I agree and it is what it is. Life will go on. I know it's a tick off that our shacks get vandalized but in the end we still can punch some holes drop some lines and try to catch some fish.

Has become slow for myself as well. Hardly seeing anything on the marcum anymore and when I do they only come up for a quick sniff and take off. The fish have been very neural to negative from what I can see, never seen any in shallow most fish we seen were in the 22-25 ft depths.

I don't fish it myself but talked to a buddy of mine today on the phone while he was out. No water on the ice yet and sounded like the bite was really tough. Super slow today he said

Ice is great! A very small amount of run off at the north end which froze up, so no concern.

Just went out to fix the shack today, neighbour broke it while moving it so guess who has to fix it, should have been fishing but nope.

Was out on Saturday morning for a few hrs caught 1 walleye. There was still snow cover. Than went out Sunday morning for a couple hrs 5 perch and a walleye. With the sun and heat the snow was pretty much gone and some water on the ice. Lots of guys were moving there shacks off including myself.

Yeah with these temps and rain today a guy is going to have to start being cautious. A friend of mine said he measured only 18 inches on Blackstrap 2 weeks ago. It takes a while for ice to start rotting but with these temps and only 18 inches of ice to melt away, i'd be pretty cautious right now with a truck. Only takes one bad spot to make things very interesting...be careful out there fellas

The edges will be getting sketchy with the run off. I think it will be walking on for me for the rest of the season.

Pulled the shack off last night, still lots of ice but around our shack the top 1.5 " or so was breaking through. Not too many left out there.

nothing but jumbos yesterday, and lots of them along with some walleyes. great afternoon/evening.... when its to busy to leave the shelter and two rods are popping your having a great day.   the cooler temps will help prolong the inevitable. hopefully a few more trips.
