Great read, TY for sharing i have been googling this for 2 years now and i was almost excited when you said you would be writing this.. Ive it wouldnt be to much to ask, could ya put together a step by step with the Lazer blades, i think i have to completely wrong stones for doing it..

Just popped back in here, didn't realize there was a couple more posts... If I get my hands on a set of lazer blades I will do it in one of my "reserved" posts at the top of this thread... Honestly if you have the stones ;D you can flip them on their side sandwiched between some 3/4" lumber and run the blades that way following the steps I presented... Most stones are 3/8" thick and with the correct motion will work the blades nicely...

Those Chinese blades I did for my buddy are ridiculously sharp and cutting ice amazing... I told him to get a set of Swedish blades and keep the Chinese blades as spares though for when I'm sharpening the swedes...

I just got myself a set of Swedish mora blades for my old 8" jiffy hand auger that a member on here was nice enough to give to me, I also made an adapter for my dewalt drill... I drilled 7 holes today on one old (2007yr) battery with no signs of slowing down it was nice not cranking today

My 8" Mora Ice blades are proving very difficult to sharpen. They are curved so I can't get parts of the edge to lie flat on the stone. I don't know the solution.

The same way you would sharpen the curved part of a knife blade..

It's curved in the opposite direction though forming a rainbow type arch.

Then you are trying to sharpen lazer blades, not mora blades... Reread this thread about trying to sharpen the lazers.. They are the *****s of augers blades to sharpen,

A7X, my hunch is you're a woodworker also, I use pretty much the same techniques in sharpening my hand tools. ;)  Very nice article.

You need a thinner set of stones can't use the wide stones... Definitely doable at home...

Why yes I am! That's where I've spent most of my life... I do many things but woodworking is one of my faves...

Thanks for the info, I'm going to try doing my spare hand auger myself. If I still have them, I'm going to try and post a pic of two sets of blades I dropped off at a bait shop last year at a bait shop, got charged $35, and they were ground down to nothing, useless, had to get new ones. You'll get a good laugh.

A7X, have you ever used a wheel? Years ago I had a guy that would put a concave edge on my blades, I think he had a wheel and a jig. I forget if it made much of a difference though, just curious.
Catch, Photo, and Release!! Thank You

Has anybody tried sharpening the chipper blades for a power auger using this method yet?

Same theory applies... Just pretend the grooves aren't there...

Thanks.
That is what I was thinking, yet wanted to make sure. I have that goofy Jiffy model 50 where the rotation is backwards compared to the other Jiffy augers and the blades are tough to find.

Can anyone recommend a set of 3 stones that I could maybe flip on its side to use the narrow edge to sharpen my set of concave lazer blades?

The best thing to sharpen Lazer style blades would be a jar, PVC tube, or the right sized pipe/cylinder... Tape the appropriate grit to it and do it... You can buy sandpaper in any grit you can buy stones...

I would not try anything with a flat edge on lazer blades, it can be done but it would be better to use something round..

Just my thoughts on lazers..

Thanks, don't know how I missed that. I just dropped my blades off to be sharpened for now. I'm going to practice in the offseason but I'll be using your advice. Thanks again.

A7x, not to stray off topic  but can those electric fillet knife blades be sharpened? I just ordered new replacement 6 in. for my rapala electric knife but wondering if serrated blades can be sharpened.

Yes they can be done, I wouldn't want to do them... If they were mine I would... but if a friend came to me with em I think I'd tell em how to do it haha!...

I've done a bunch of serrated edges. .. Mostly pocket knives, I wouldn't really want to do what you're talking about or a bread knife etc... like a full blade length of serrations... I don't mind 5 or 6 serrations on a pocket knife though. ..

If I buy new blades every year until I am too old to go Ice fishing anymore. I will save myself about  $1415 if I don't buy that thing. Or $939 if I can still go until I am 90 Years old. I like sharpening my own.
