interested in buying a vexilar. wondering which one i should purchase?
the one i get the most feedback from will be the one i purchase next weekend.

For me, the extra $$$ spent on the zoom is worth every penny. FL-18 for me.

I agree that the FL-18 is worth the extra $$. You get the advantage of the zoom and the low power adjustment. With the FL-8 you cannot have the zoom and need to by the S cable for low power, shallow water fishing. Then the only decision is Genz pack, Pro pack or Ultra Pack.

If your gonna go, go all the way. FL-18 with the dual beam transducer. You won't be disappointed.

I agree with the rest - FL18. Some guys who have the FL8 say there is no need for the zoom, but unless I'm really shallow, that's about all I focus on.

I've got the fl8 and it has made catching and locating fish much easier. Although my friend just bought the FL18 genz pack and i must say the zoom is nice for the shallow water. The Genz pack doesn't fit in a five gallon pail because the plastic blue carrier is square.Something to think about. I got mine a couple years ago and don't have the extra cash to get the FL18, but i'll probably sell my FL8 next year on ebay and purchase the FL18. Stay On Top, Utes

i used my buddies 8 last year one guy showed me his 18 and i spent the extra bucks go with the 18 however i saw a lowrace x67 today which was very impressive bassman 79

About the only time I use the "unzoomed" side is to see how close my jig is to the zoomed side. LOL!! I pay attention to it just in case a school of suspended fish pss by, but have yet to see it.

The Genz pack was designed to fit on top of a five gallon bucket so you don't have to bend over to adjust it.

[/quote]Now Is that lazy or what ( is that really why it has the square base???) LOL, The FL8 and FL18 fit on a five gallon bucket just as well, if thats where you want it. I prefer mine on the ice because once it's set i generally don't have to mess with it and it's less likely to get knocked over and broke. Stay On Top, Utes

Seriously, the bottom of the Genz Pack is round to fit on the open end of a bucket, where you can still store gear or fish in the bucket. I don't use that option either, but that is what it was designed for.

I shouldn't say the bottom is round, but rather the front and back edge of the bottom is "grooved" to fit the rim of the bucket.

get the 18 with the zoom I like the genz packs mainly becase of the hard durable plastic case. Yes I abuse mine alot

I'll agree the zoom feature is awsome, but it wouldnt be much help in 6 feet of water, which is pretty much max depth for the pond i fish

Consider one of these. I am completely sold on my Vexilar but the Marcums have charged ahead in technology & pricing.

I like my fl-18 ultra pack
can put it in a 5 gal bucket for protection
modified my bucket with 2 vert rod holders in
the rear to hold spare rods even while sitting on bucket
1 swivel rod holder in front hold rod while in use
a pouch in front to hold pliers bait lures etc
and a cushioned lid to sit on
every thing I need to jig in one package
