Did you check the rubber gasket where you pour fuel in. If it is dried out and cracked it might be leaking. Easy to get a new o-ring at the hardware store.

I'll check but it seems to smell the worst when it's working.

Using Coleman fuel?? Is it a dual fuel / gasoline/?? My dual fuel was stinking, sputtering, running like crap. I dumped all the old out and put in fresh no lead..Runs like a champ..Guess it didn't like year old gas and water..

Sounds like old fuel, wouldn't hurt to change the mantles either. We have burnt them with small holes, but a large hole could cause a problem. Mantles are cheap.

What model Coleman is it?

The single-mantle 200A is famous for developing a loose joint in the little elbow on the top, making them pretty stinky.  Sealing it up with some Muffler Mender will cure it.

Invest in battery powered lights. No gas, no mantels, no fuss!

Thanks. 2 mantles.

I better do something. My eyes are about swelled shut this morning from rubbing them in my sleep. The leak irritates my eyes.

Well did you fix it taxi1, I have one that does same thing. I think it's the cap.

take out the generator and clean it or replace it could be  not getting the correct air fuel mixture and running rich.generators in lanterns do not last forever.

If the cap is leaking, the lantern wouldn't hold pressure and you'd be pumping it up often to keep it running.  I'm guessing that's not the problem....

(A very simple and easy test for a leaking cap is to pressurize the lantern, then dip the tank in a bucket of water.  Any leaks will create a stream of bubbles.)

Yeah I replaced the mantles and it's not a problem anymore. Or I'm used to it now.  ;D

Thank you all for the suggestions!

My mantles are new so that's not the problem. Just asking when I was young you could use what they called white gas from a gas station. Does anybody use unleaded or is this a no no.

I only run Coleman Fuel in my lanterns.  The newer dual-fuel versions will certainly run on much cheaper unleaded gasoline, but gas has a bunch of chemical additives in it and I'd prefer not to be breathing the stuff in the confines of my ice fishing shelter.  Using gasoline will also dirty up the generator quicker.  That's not really an issue as the money you save burning gas vs. Coleman fuel ($3/gal. vs. $12/gal.) will more than pay for an occasional replacement generator.

The lanterns that are made to be able to run on Coleman fuel or gasoline are marked "Dual Fuel."  The ones without that designation are best run on Coleman fuel.

Take it easy,
Bob
