Tying Ice Fishing jigs
« on: Dec 03, 2014, 10:01 AM »
I am an avid fly tier and my son asked if we could tie some flies for ice fishing. We do tie scuds for the season, but I was curious if there are some good resources for tying other flies for ice fishing. I have some material for marabou jigs. Thoughts?

I use nymphs, like hares ears, copper johns, pheasant tail and chronimids
Tight lines and big fish

I'm always thinking of new stuff to tie for under the ice, I just started thinking about some mayfly larvae or baby crawdads. Still trying to research which mayfly lives in CO lakes and what their life cycle is...

Very interesting.  Could you tie a leach or I just read an article on how to tie a worm. I think those would work good.

Thanks a bunch everyone. Great advice. Randingo, I can definitely tie a leech and I do have some San Juan worms that I could try. My son and I will tie some leeches and see how it goes.

I've always had pretty good luck tying small amount of marabou on size 14 jig hooks.

One of the deadliest jigs I use for trout up to 25 inches is a flea fly.  Years ago you could find them in a few shops, but it is a simple jig to tie.  All you need is a  1/64 oz jig head either in chartuesse, pink or white tipped with the end of bright colored saddle hackle.  I tip with either a grub or mealworm.  Fish two rods until you find the zone with one 6 inches off the bottom and the other halfway to the bottom.  Move slowly up about a foot and then let it drop back down. Do this every five minutes or so unless you are getting taps and the move up and down a inch or two slowly.  Good fishing!
