ION ice auger- so far not bad at all
« on: Mar 02, 2014, 07:07 PM »
After all my ice fishing years with a hand auger finally made a change to a power auger and of all things an electric ice auger. The thick ice this year tipped the balance for me.  Cuts through the 20+ inches of ice without any issues.  Still baby the battery as they recommend, hard to believe they didn't engineer a power pack to withstand cold temps.  I do believe it's a keeper.

Nice. I purchased a newly power auger (Nils-gas) this year as well and must say I love it. With this thick ice it's nice not having to do it by hand. Enjoy your new toy...

Second year with my ION and still great!!   Fished North Hero for four days with my grandson and we would cut 30 holes for the tipups and another 8 or so for jigging thru 2 feet of ice.....cut these every day with no problems!  Also, drove off ice back to room at Holiday Harbor and left it to charge for 1 1/2 hours and had a full charge for anything else we wanted to do that day.  A great augar!!!

love my Nils , had it for about 8 years now and it still cuts through the ice like warm butter
I do all types of fishing; but I am Die hard Ice angler.
I love Ice Fishing the lakes of Rutland County. Recently moved to NY and now will be Ice fishing the Lakes Of New York.

Got mine this year and love how it cuts so quietly and easily!  Gotta keep battery warm on those really cold days is only downfall so far.

Are they much lighter than gas augers?  Most products with electric motors are quite a bit lighter than those with gas engines.

I use my buddies all the time, way better than using a smelly, heavy, problematic and noisy, gas auger!

How long does the battery last if it gets to cold? i need a new auger next year
Load it, Drive it, Park it
Bait it, Jig it, Hook it
Catch it, Clean it, Cook it
Simply put just get out/ and do it

For some it does, but we have no problem keeping it warm in a cooler with a hand warmer... It fits in a pocket, but the cooler is nicer.

I see a 40v replacement battery for that auger is priced at $159.99 on ION's Web site: http://www.ioniceaugers.com/foundations/store/shopdetail.asp?params=11736

A 40v replacement battery from Amazon.com is priced at $397.05: http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Performance-Auger-Replacement-Battery/dp/B00A80C8J8/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_text_y

Quite the price difference. Do some research before buying replacement parts for these augers!

I've been using a hand warmer and old lunch bag.  The battery is very easy to take on and off.

I have the jiffy pro 4 got it this winter. I love it, second pull with a little throttle, maybe if the tanks been out below zero for awhile. Only thing I worry about is the plastic throttle getting brittle with age or extreme cold... Kinda heavy 38lbs for the 8in. I would recommend... Everyone who has used says they love it.
A bad day of fishing, is always better than a good day at work!

I have the propane jiffy... it was great year one and 2, but the blades (three year warranty) definitely don't last 3 years. sucks, cause replacement blades are $80, and warranty which i still have has a 3 week turn around not sure how they expect someone to send in blades in middle of season? it would be better if they mailed blades and then you sent yours back. otherwise starts good runs good. super cold the propane may leak a little (rubber gasket shrinks a little).

I might be looking hard at the 8in ION for next year.  22lbs and 40 holes thru 2ft of ice sounds great to me.  Been looking at the propane augers, but the ION is still so much lighter.  Not getting another gas auger, electric or propane for me the next time around.
