6" or 8"
« on: Jan 22, 2014, 08:02 PM »
My power auger went to crap and the repair shop said $200 to fix it so looking to buy a new one.  What do you fellow fisherman prefer, 6" or 8".  Thanks for any replies.

I use a six for bass, pannies, and perch. I don't fish for big pike, but I know a six wouldn't cut the mustard

Once you try to fit a trophy through a 6 and can't do it you will never use under 8.

8" is the way to go for a power auger. ten inch is overkill imo and can be dangerous when it's late ice and the temps keep the holes from refreezing, I watched a buddy put his leg thru a ten inch hole that was barley froze over, covered with snow and wrench his knee, not to mention a small child could almost fit through one. anything under 8"s is asking for trouble when you land the fish of a lifetime. If you only fish panfish than 6 or 7" would be fine but I've caught 14" crappie that I was glad I had an 8" hole for. Ice fishing is challenging enough, might as well make it easier when you can.

I think 8" is the perfect size for everything but if it is a hand auger I'd go with a 6 incher to make your life easier.

I would go with the 8"...... Good to have on cold days when the holes need to be reopened and get smaller.....

5 for hand 8 for power, like many posts before mine you don't wanna try and squeeze a huge northern through a 5-6 in hole. If you are fishing for anything but pike a 5 in hand auger is perfect. I can cut 15 inches in seconds with my 1980 hand auger, as long as the blades are sharp. Haven't failed to get a fish through yet.

For me, the use of electronics makes the difference. Use a 6" lazer for everything (pulled big pike and tiger out of one), but bought a Marcum this year and wish I had a little extra room in the hole. Once this one bites the dust, I'll be buying a 8" Nils
I thank God for everything in my life. But I especially thank God for ice.

I think that is my buddy you are talking about. He spilled my shiners all over the ice too. We were on silver

I'd rather have a little bit of extra room than a little tight. I hand drill 8 inch holes all day if needed....

6" hand or power.  never had a fish not fit including a 40" muskie and 10lb trout.  nils  6" power is lightweight and quick and drilling a quick ten holes is almost effortless

I have a 7 inch Eskimo hand auger and it is a gem. My 8 inch Finbore is a beast to turn. Much prefer the 7 inch might downgrade to a 6
