Gas smell
« on: Dec 13, 2005, 12:46 PM »
What do you guys and gals use to get the smell of gas off of your hands when your out on the ice? I noticed the other night after starting up my auger that my hands stunk of gas after I shut the auger down.

Since I have 2 year old twins, I have a good supply of unscented wipes hanging around.  I keep a few in the truck ( they will freeze solid in cold weather).  I use an old pair of gloves while handling the auger, then wipe my hands, and put on new gloves.

I still have a couple of bottles of "Dr, Juice" hand and lure cleaner that I use.  They quit making it a few years ago.  If I had known that the supply was about to dry up , I would have bought a case or two.  It takes fish smell off of your hands after you're through handling fish all day as well or better than anything else that I have found, and takes away the "human" smells from your hands and lures too.

Try the water free soap that they sell, can't think of the exact name but you just squeeze it out of the bottle and rub it around on your hands.

Thats one of the big downfalls of using a gas powered auger .. that gas smell.

LOL .. i always try to get my friend to drill the holes LOL.

Gas is tough to really get off your hands where you wont smell it .. i dont think there is anything too good that u can use to get ALL the gas scent off your hands on the ice.  Rember that though you may not smell it, the fish still can pick up the scent.

The best thing I have found to remove the "gas smell" from my hands is the WONDER BAR.  I have used this for the past few years and IT REALLY WORKS!!

Check it out............you won't be sorry!  I think I picked mine up at Gander or Cabelas.

Ussually i try to wear gloves but sometimes you cant help but to get gas on your hands so ill take some powerbait or otehr smelly attractent and rub some on my hands or take a couple of maggots and smear them on your hands or catch a fish  and if your keeping it  then use that fish to get your hands smelling liek fish again :)

that wonderbar thing is just stainless steel, my beloved mother-in-law (laid to rest 12/9/05)
taught me to keep a stainless spoon around when working on gas related projects
just put some water on your hands and rub the stainless like a bar of soap
it works!

I keep a couple of pairs of industrial strength latex gloves in my ice fishing gear and just put them on anytime I'm handling my auger.  You can find them at WallyWorld and even some automotive shops.
If you can find the heavier versions (the ones I get are purple)  they don't rip, or stick to your hands and can be reused several times.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

Wipe my hands on my buddy's jacket
I always try to start the auger on shore and let it run for a short period of time
That way there if there is any gas on my hands I can wash or wipe it off
Auger starts nice and easy after that

I have one of those wonder bars in my tackle box.  It's been there 3 years and I have yet to try it.  I'm going out tomorrow so I'll try to remember to try it.  My mom gave it to me for christmas one year along with a folding filet knife and hook removing pliers.  She has one and swears it works....

My mother in law always gets me something out there for christmas, but I usually love them.  One year she got me that  along with some other fishing stuff.  At first I laughed but I keep it in by tackle box and use it when I get gas smell on my hands.  I just go over to a hole that I just drilled, scoop out some water, wet it and rub it around my hands.  The snow also works well with the blade.   She got me this year battery opearated socks that are supposed to keep your toes warm.  Anyone ever try these socks before?

All those suggestions are awesome but even if your hands are clean, you can still leave a human scent on your lure or bait. Thats why I always have some scent juice that I squirt even live minnows with. It eliminates that residual human scent and also serves as an attractant.
Being in the great outdoors is not a matter of life or death. Its far more important than that!

Am I the only one whose gas auger doesn't leave them smelling like gas?

My old eskimo (or was it a strikemaster?) auger started hard in its old age, stunk and spewed.  The Jiffy Stealth that I bought a couple of years ago starts easy and doesn't spew or smell much at all.

I don't notice any gas smell on me from using the auger - and I'm one to notice gas smells.  I do use the gas cap vent - but keep it closed as much as possible.

This is the best stuff I have used.  Takes away the gas and fish smells no problem.  I keep a film container
full with me so I can keep it handy in my pocket.
