Maple creek had 12-13" of ice on Wednesday...  fishing was slow.  Not sure how the 40mph winds affected it today

Just drove by this afternoon, the wind opened up 20' areas N of walking trail around the trees and could see under the bridge was open water. I did see 1 person south of walking trail on ice fishing. Wish I were him. I am guessing the projected winds on Saturday will open up more water. It's hard to believe the wind can cut 12-14" of ice.

Got out today, like ryhof said, a lot of open water, so use caution... I fished over by the dam and still had 12-13" of ice

10 - 12 inches pretty much all over Maskenthine! Spring on East side where the culvert comes out of the little dam across from and little north of the swimming beach. A nice gill about 1 out 20 dinks, and crappies can be had. Lots of blade dulling sand on the surface of the ice. And of course bring your cleats..

Thanks. Guess I'll hang around here on the 14" of ice we have on the ponds.

Drove by there when the warm winds were blowing and there was open water around the trees and under the walk bridge. All closed up now but you may go from 10" to 2" pretty quick. Be careful!!!

Kyler guess I don't have to tell you to watch out for cattle on Monastery road on your way to or from Maple Creek.   :o  Did that accident I called in hit one of those cows or just roll it trying to avoid them?     I hope to have Thursday off also and was thinking of trying to hit Wanahoo if the ice conditions improve.  Would feel better if I wasn't fishing solo.

Thanks again for slowing down traffic for us, that accident could have been a whole lot worse... the guy hit both cow and calf, both cows died, and so did the Silverado... I'll have to let you know about thursday, I might be able to meet you there.

I think I'll be heading up to Maple Creek on Thursday, possibly Friday if anyone wants to join me.  I'll be in the Nanook with the pile of fish next to it.  ;D

I was thinking of trying Wanhoo but I think I have a better idea of where the ice is likely to be thin at Maple Creek so I think I will stick with that.  I've read about too many people going through on various lakes lately.  I hope to get up there Thursday I'll look for you if I make it up there.

sorry i missed you yesterday tech, i made it out to day and had good ice, could have skated on most of it... fishing was slow, took me awhile to find the fish, and once i did they still weren't as hungry as they normally are.  took one 3 keeper gills 7-8" range, one catfish, 1.5lb ish range, and a 17 inch walleye.  Threw back some average 12-15" bass, and some smaller gills.

CAUTION  From the jetty just south of the boat ramp and out past the jetty between 50 and 100 feet there are three buckets with caution tape between them.   The Leigh VFD was doing some water rescue  training in that spot today.   I believe they cut a chunk of ice out and replaced it when they finished but there will be a weak spot for awhile.  It is well marked.

I commend them for investing in the cold water suits and doing a training exercise  on cold water rescue.  You have to admire the dedication of these volunteers of a small town fire department.  As I said the spot is well marked.  Also the water didn't appear to me more than about waist deep in that spot based on the guy that was in the water.
