Smelt Shack
« on: Dec 13, 2005, 08:08 AM »
The river looks like its starting to form some ice.  It won't be long now.  I have just built a nice three man shack (fits 4 people, but three can fish with only 8 lines) to keep on the river this year rather than drag my portable down and set it up every other night.  They are likely running right now.....wish I could get out there.  I am thinking I might be able to share it some this winter with anyone interested.  Guy's I work with seem excited about it too.  They are offering a $10/night donation to help pay for materials just as long as I get to use it once in a while.  Sounds like a good way to have it paid for.  It would be nice to have someone using it regularly to keep the ice hole from freezing up too bad when I'm not using it.

When you are ready to go....give a weeks notice at least so I can guarantee nobody is using it.  Most likely it will just be week nights, then I can meet you there after work and unlock it for you and you can just lock it back up when you leave.

I've never gone and want to this year for sure.  Sounds like a lot of fun.

On the same idea, this may be a stupid question.  but, I'm gonna ask.

Would Smelt taken from one of the camps, if you kept them alive, overnight, survive if they were used in a lake the next day?

I tell you, I'd love to have some 8-10" Jack smelts to use on opening day.

The place I fish, I know there are plenty of BIG FISH who'd eat'em.

No place around Gorham, Windham, Naples has or even gets those big Jacks.

Suggestions? Ideas?

They usually last most of the winter for me in big coolers with a good aeration system changing the water once a week.  They are tough as nails and work great for big game fish.  I even caught some white perch on them last year in brewer lake.

No....it's a bring your own bait, lantern, and heater.  One or two lanterns will heat it up well enough though....it's sealed up good with manual vents on the gable ends that you can open.  I don't want to leave my stuff in the shack because that is an open invitation for someone to take it.
