Best fillet knives?
« on: Jan 15, 2014, 11:16 PM »
Going to pick up a quality knife soon. So many to chose
from. I'm having trouble picking one. Have a favorite?
Mainly going to be used for panfish. Thank for any advice.

You should do a search on this. I bet theres a ton of info and threads on this subject.  As well as opinion.

A great topic for sure.

Hi,

Dexter Knives have been around since 1818 - USA made.
My family were butchers and have used Dexter's for decades.
Also most commercial fishermen and fish houses in New England use Dexter's.
Well made, durable, will hold an edge, and very affordable.
Fillet knives from 6 to 9 inches and they also make the fish gripper.
I personally like the wood handle fillet knives.

Best knives are Cutco's. Check out the internet for reviews.

Free no questions asked lifetime warranty and sharpening. Best fillet knife you can buy, and not as expensive as other inferior knives.

I have a cutco-----------  Save your money. Will not hold a edge at all. Some Rapalas are very good, Usually older used ones, Leech lake is about as good as it gets-- If you can afford it. Old timer and Buck are pretty good. 12 dollar black and decker electric at wally world works great. Up to you how much to spend, But there is the truth,  Steve

...Some Rapalas are very good, Usually older used ones...

A friend of mine has one of the older wooden handled ones and his family has been using it since he was a kid.  I got one of the newer ones for christmas, so far it's held up and works quite nicely for what I need.

Everyone I know that has a Cutco raves about them. They have an adjustable blade length, and amazing warranty and free sharpening. One guy I know hasn't sharpened it all season and its still as sharp after tonnes of fish.

Maybe your fillet technique isn't correct? No offence or anything, that's just not what I've seen regarding the Cutcos.

Yeah capt. There is a lot of info out there. Kinda come here for info because of
the knowledge that users have on IS. I did try to use the search but had trouble
with it and don't have much patience with computers. Figured I just as well ask
the question and pic the brains. I there is such a place to get lead in the right direction
about fishing, this has got to be it. Thanks Again everyone. By the way I'm getting a
Dexter and a rapala.

Dont forget about Rada I got one for Christmas a couple years ago and I love it. I use it for everything from fish to deer and everything in between. I even use it for veggies in the kitchen.

I use a Victorinox Fibrox filet knife for in the kitchen.
You'd have to find one with a sheath.

Good no slip grip, stays sharp and nice and maneuverable.
It replaced my Henkel fillet.  I'm tempted to replace the rest of the set.

Also works great for dismantling chicken & turkey.

I always vote for the Dexter/Russell. I have seen the mates on offshore boats filet literally thousand of fish in a row and just give a few hits on a diamond rod and be back at it. I use them myself. As a matter of fact I have never even seen a different brand on a fishing boat.

I use kershaw and dexter russel in the boat for cod and haddock... but for filletting a bunch of whites or yellows my Rappala electric will do a pile of them in 1/3 the time it takes to do them with a conventional knife..
