2 stroke or propane
« on: Jan 13, 2014, 03:12 PM »
When I get a new auger should I go with the two stroke or a propane version what are some pros and cons about both?
The fishing is always good and sometimes the catching is good too

Heard good things about the propane augers but the thought of propane when it gets really cold bothers me. I bought a 2 stroke strike master this year and it works great. Mix your gas right and store it properly and you should never have a problem.

Last winter buckfish and me  bought a propane auger--This is the best auger I ever used ever,, always just one pull no matter how could it is,,NO mixing gas no gas can,,,al last season on a 1 pound can,,thats almost 500 holes...propane has to be over -20 to produce vapor,,if it's colder than that ,I won't fish...

Propane just like the other guys have said. One or two pulls and it starts. No issues with it.

Ive owned the jiffy propane auger for three seasons and will never consider anything else. Yes on the very cold days you have to keep the propane tank warm but that is not a big deal to me. That is nothing compared to the hassles that come along with two strokes and ethanol gas. I have done nothing to this auger for three seasons straight. It has always started within 2 pulls. I don't do anything to store it just put it away and pull it out the next year.

yepper agree 100% I only have an 18 volt, no problems 15 to 20 holes on a charge, temp does not mean anything,

for the jigging I do that is enough for me.. and the amount of time I am out there for.. only 2 holes needed to load up on fish..

ok maybe more than 2 lol

Used my new Jiffy Propane yesterday for the first time and was very impressed. Started on the 2nd pull, no noise, no smoke, cuts fast.

Strikemaster 8" electra lazer.  No one who has used this auger has not been amazed by how quiet and good it works. it has a little weight to it but drills plenty of ice on a charge and you can get an extra battery or power it off a wheeler or truck if u want.  Reeds has them now for a great price.  Less noise, less stink, and you dont have to start it.

I drilled 27 holes with mine on Friday in 18" of ice... still had 2/3 charge left...they claim 40 holes through 24" of ice on 1 charge..

My second year with my ION and I couldn't be happier with it. Sold my Eskimo Shark last spring, done with gas.

I like the easy starts with propane. When it is -20 it does have a hard time  but I usually have a place to warm it up if it is that cold. If you have an SUV or a car go with the propane. At some point a gas job will leak in the vehicle and stink for months. JMO.

I also have a shark that I am thinking of selling. I want to hold on to it for another year to see if I would ever want to start using it again(its a great auger). But I cant ever see wanting to deal with a gasser over the ion ever again!

I love the gas smell  ;D and i have a nonethanol pump a block from my house i pay a bit more per gallon but in a season i dont even use a full gallon..the propane one seems legit and i already refill bottles so it would be cost effective but i already have a gasser that works just fine so maybe in 10 years when it starts breaking down ...by then who knows what the latest n greastest will be.

I bought a 2 stroke the first year that the propane came out because I don't like being a guinea pig. Now that I have seen them in action I know what I will get the next time. Propane is the future plenty of power and no gas problems.
