19 pound browns in CT
« on: Jan 04, 2014, 06:31 PM »
Read an article from In-Fisherman that said CT stocked about 200 surplus breeder browns in about a dozen lakes, for ice fishing season. They range from 3-19 pounds!
Some of the lakes are Beach, Mashapaug, West Hill, West Side, Stillwater, Tyler, Mohawk, and Squantz.  Better get a 10" auger!!

Thanks for posting, but are you sure it said brown trout? The state stocks breeder Atlantic Salmon of roughly that size in some of those lakes.. ?

Back a few years ago a 5 lb brown was very common in East Twin. We use to catch a number of them between the 5-6 lb range during the ice season and in open water. Still hear guys pulling in 8 lb or larger browns there....at least claim to.

Brownies can be of many different looks. They can be yellowish or silvery, big spots little spots. They're not all the same. More than likely not a salmon if that's what you are wondering as no atlantics are stocked there. Try goggling brown trout pics.

a 17LBer at Squantz in the fall also.....these fish are hatchery fish though...do not get me wrong still fun and special. Fun is why we do this right... but the actual fish is nothing like the big browns that have acclimated to some selected lakes and are growing as we converse...Sqauntz, Candlewood, Saugy, Twin and others hold pristine browns with fat bellies. The new state record brown caught at the Saugy was a holdover from a small stocky making it a bit more special in my humble opinion.......Agree on Twin...has been decimated...nothing compared to the glory days of the late 90's.

I was on west branch res over the line in Putnam last ice season and watched a 8lb and 10lb brown jigged up in one afternoon.

The alewife population on East Twin is dwindling which equates to smaller browns. The forage buffet is no longer as extravagant as it used to be.  Maybe the Kokes will make a come back???

Was at Cedar lake 2 weeks ago had 5 flags in 5 hrs and one was a runner that took about 20-30 yds of line before came off. But only got one small perch that played with our minnow and never even set off our flag
 Felt it in our hands.
