Will this hook work?
« on: Dec 17, 2013, 11:11 AM »
I know it may not be everyone's preferred hook but will a size 1/0 bait holder work if using medium to large minnows for pike?

Thanks

I think so, but then again, my track record isn't that of a heavy hitter.  :)

I gave up on single hooks after I had one get straightened out up on Black Lake...... for pike we use #2 trebels.....They are about the diameter of a quarter.  One hook goes through the minnow at the dorsal and the other two lay flush against the body.  Have caught pickerel and large trout with this set-up also, so you don't need to change hooks all the time.  (I have a second set of tip ups rigged with small trebels for panfish).  Also, don't forget your wire leader, or when I run out I tie on some 20 lb.  monofilament.

RIyak, The correct answer to your question is; on Page 4  of the 2013 Dem Fresh Water:rules and regulations on line three.  For the purpose of fishing through the "Ice", up to five lines with a "SINGLE" hook on each, personally attended and help by any device designed for that purpose "Tip Up" may be used. I went to a hearing at DEM 235 Promenade St. last year year and asked this question pertaining to dead baiting for Northern Pike with a treble and was told "Do not get caught, You will re prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law $200 and lose your license and equipment ! Wayne I ran abait and tackle store for 12 years in Pascoag,R.I.

Sorry just noticed R.I.  and not NY.  Sorry I don't know your laws so disregard my statements.  Anyway, good luck this year!

sure it will, we use everything from #8-5/0  depending on bait.  1/0 is a good middle of the road size for any bait.

Yeah, I was reading the regs a while ago and noticed that. It seems that such a regulation would outlaw the use of just about any non-jig lure you could think of….Swedish pimple, chubby darter, etc. Besides soft plastics, jigs and swim baits, what artificials DONT have treble hooks?? I wouldn't put it past the geniuses at the RI DEM to pass such a regulation. Just look at the moronic no corn/closed trout waters rules...

The purpose of the rule is not forbidding Lures with treble hooks. There are used for Jigging. The rule is again for a Tip/up or Tilt with BAIT only a single hook is allowed because of the damage with a belly shot with a big treble has on all fish that swallow a bait, dead bait or live
