Rookie question
« on: Dec 13, 2013, 09:34 AM »
Hey guys, new at the ice fishing gig. Was wondering when the best time to go would be .  Morning, mi day, evening, night time, will the gills and bass still hit at night in te winter?

Haven't targeted Bass at night, but Crappies & Gills will hit at night for sure.  I usually have my best luck in the morning, or just before evening though.

What works best for bass as far as baits go ? I usually just use a variety of jig heads and a wax worm and get all kinds of gills and an occasional small bass

Many years ago growing up in Illinois, I use to use minows, shiners, fat heads.....any of those on a tip up.  Occassionally I'd get a few on waxies and other jigs etc. But if your going to target bass, any of those I mentioned work really well.  Good luck and good fishing.

Medium shiners hooked shallow through the back just behind the dorsal fin a foot or 2 off the bottom gets them all the time. Some times I like to drop a larger jig down with a med. shiner hooked through the lips.
