The rubber band trick
« on: Dec 12, 2013, 01:35 PM »
Could someone put a pic of the rubber band trick? I looked it up on here and and a little confused on how to do it.

Reel out line to desired depth you wish to fish, if you wish place a line marker. Reel out another 10+ feet of line, depending on how far you want the fish to run before hook set. It may vary from species to species, Use your judgement.
Lay your line on top of a small rubber band like this.

Grasp the rubber band on either side of the line and pass one loop through the other like this.

Pull the working loop tight so that it creates a hitch around your line like this.

Place the loop around your reel and then reel in the 10+ feet of line that you wish the fish to run with.

It sounds difficult but once you do it, it will click and you will say AAAHHHHH!
Some people like the rubber band to break on big fish. I've never had one of these bands break but if I wanted to I could use a thinner band or take one of these and snip it lightly with nail clippers to create a weak point in the band.
Hope this helps.
It must be something in the water.

Damm Alex there's 3 yards and a cloud of dust and then theres you going for the whole 9 yards. Nothing tops Alexs photo description but you can use a weaker rubberband for weaker bait.

That line is probably 20 years old so I'm not certain about the manufacturer. I believe it is 30lb braided  ???

thats the tip i needed for rigging giant baits so they cant trip the flag...ill just loop the rubber band as shown, and not wind any line over it...

I used this often when I didn't have a snosled, traps spread out over 100 yards it takes a while to get to them. This way the fish don't spool you by the time you get there. I use it on salmon, trout, but it works great on lake trout or any other species that likes to take the bait and run and spool your line. I don't always use this method.
It must be something in the water.

The way most guys use it , is with the intent to break, that way, there is a small stop in the run, without pulling the bait from the fish, or having him drop it. We tie it in about 10 yds, with a circle hook, the secret is to have the right tension ( thickness) of rb so that it does break. I have used it with success, and have had it fail, where it is spooled to the rb, and the bait is dropped

Although I've never heard of that, it does make perfect sense and can be adapted for many different uses.
