Frozen shrimp
« on: Dec 11, 2013, 03:50 PM »
I knew some guys that would tip spoons or jigs with pieces of shrimp and would do pretty well catching cutthroat and rainbow trout. I've never tried it yet but was curious if anyone else has ever used shrimp for bait? Besides night crawlers and meal worms or waxies has anyone had much luck with pieces of sucker meat or dead minnows on cutts or rainbows? Just trying to find out if I might want to try some different baits on my jigs/spoons. As a bonus I could always eat the shrimp if I got hungry!

In the past, a long, long, time ago I used to attempt to fish for rainbow with sucker meat. I never ended up actually catching a Rainbow, cutthroat, or brookie, or brown on sucker meat.

Shrimp works on cutts and bows.  It is becoming the go-to bait in a couple of lakes in NW Wyoming. ;)

Ran into some gents last year with some bigger bows on the ice at North Crow. They were fishing deep with pimples tipped with shrimp. Hadn't seen those size of rainbows come out of there til then.

I usually jig with a mealie on the tip, but last week I bought 6 uncooked frozen shrimp at the grocery store and used little pieces on the jig.  The rainbows and cuts seemed to prefer the shrimp.  It sure convinced my buddy who switched and saw his catch go up.  The shrimp is easy to use, and what you have left over at the end of the day goes back into the freezer for next time.

Works really well on perch in some lakes as well, have caught some nice trout on it as well, but like some have commented earlier you have to use the right stuff.  Tried the ones in the can, the cocktail version, they were not stiff enough to stay attached to the hook, learn as you go I guess.

I know last year there were a lot of guys on DeSmet using frozen shrimp either on a jigging spoon or bare hook and doing pretty well.  Can't really say if they out fished meallies or waxies but they were catching rainbows regardless.

uncooked shrimp for cutts and bows, sometimes lakers, and sucker meat for splake, and if all else fails meal worms.

I've caught some good cats using shrimp on a tip up, but not much else. Also have tipped a jig with shrimp and caught fish, but I'm more inclined to believe it's the movement of the jig rather than the smell of the shrimp.

I've caught trout using imitation crab meat and imitation seafood sticks from wally world, so i'm sure shrimp would work as well. I think every lake is different though, as it has worked well on some lakes but not others.

Shrimp were kind of a "secret bait" for us for years, but more and more people are catching on. They do seem to work better in some lakes than others, the Antero fish seem to prefer a mealie and the 11mile fish like the shrimps. I just use the bags of pre-cooked ones at Walmart. I saw some guys at 11mile use lobster tail meat last year and they said it works very well. I also know a guy that uses raw scallops and does well for trout with them. We also caught some really nice trout out of a lake north of Laramie last year on sucker meat.  Brad.

Ratso from custom jigs and spins.  I don't fish any lakes with lakers, but I have had luck with brookies, but I kinda feel like brookies will take anything.
