pike "through" the ice
« on: Nov 27, 2005, 05:27 PM »
last weekend i went to our cabin to rake the leaves and brought my pole to catch a few pike since the ice would be freezing soon. when i got there i realized our channel had frozen over but it looked like slush instead of ice. i had a 3/5 oz. five of diamonds on and casted to the end where they always lay, and watched my lure skip across the 1/4 inch of ice. bummed i started to retrieve the lure looking the other way when a huge splash scared the crap out of me, as i jerked my pole the opposite way to save my life the pike broke through the ice to eat my lure. i was amaised and spent the next 1/2 hour top water (ice) fishing with no results but i will never forget that one. just thought i would share that with ya's.

That would scare me enough to fall in  :D. That reminds me of a time i was messing around with a lure in our channel and i got a weed stuck on it so i was reeling in really fast so i could get it off, and a pike jumped out of the water toward the lure but missed, that sure got my heart pumping!

Wow, talk about aggressive. That's one you won't forget. Did you land the fish? You could just reel it in over the ice. ;D
In open water I have had several pike come a good foot out of the water to hit lures dangling from my rod in the boat. I know what you mean by scaring a person. :o

i didnt land it because when i heard the crash of it coming through the ice it scared the crap out of me and i jerked the lure so hard it went airbore the opposite direction.

makes me think that maybe I will try a few pike rigs right below the ice this year

let those fat suckers bounce of the ice ... maybe it can trigger similar response huh? just this time ending with me landing the fat pike muahahahha
