Soft plastic fish eyes.
« on: Nov 22, 2013, 12:03 AM »
Hi all,
I see a lure company has finally came out with a fairly realistic soft plastic fish eye, neat. :)
They are called the Impulse perch eye, by Northland lures.
I like the chartreuse colored one the best, the white is not bad either.

Here in SK. fish eyes, particularly perch eyes, are a quite common bait when ice fishing for perch, walleye and from time to time pike or burbot.

I am interested to see if anyone has purchased any these baits yet?
If so, what's your thoughts good bad or other.
Have you had a chance to try them?
Any luck?

I have not seen them in stores here yet, but hope they show up some time this ice fishing season. :-\

For those of you who have not seen them yet, here is a link to the Northland site. ;)2 ---> http://www.northlandtackle.com/Product/product.taf?_function=detail&_ID=1250

Loved the idea so I ordered and received some this week, planning to use them on perch as you suggested.  They are a full 1/2" in diameter as advertised - that's a pretty large perch with an eye that size.  They are reasonably soft - you can compress them to about half their thickness with your fingers.  Sort of thought they would be a little softer. I got the chartreuse color;  they have a concentration of yellowish sparkle around the black pupil with a small bit of sparkle dispersed throughout the entire "eye".  The black pupil seems to be molded or coated over so you cannot easily scratch it off; the pupil size varies quite a bit in the same pack.  The 8 eyes in the pack are daisy chained together, so you can either trim off the connecting stubs or leave one dangling on the eye like an optic nerve.  Easily penetrated with a hook and seems to be pretty tough on the hook even when lightly penetrated.  They are dry to the touch and no fluids in the packaging to leak.

With all that said, have yet to try them.  The impulse minnows seem to work great for me on all panfish and trout so I wouild expect the "base material" would be just as effective with the perch eyes.  Better than a real perch eye???? - certainly less messy and easy to keep in your tackle box.

I finally found a tackle shop here in SK. {Pokeys tackle shop} that carries the Northland fish eyes.
Last week I picked up a pack of chartreuse and I saw that the white eyes glow so I purchased a pack of them also.

They are interesting looking for sure.

Now I will have to see if the fish like them as well as the real thing. ;)

anyone use these yet? i've always thought it was that special reflection in the perch/walleye eyes that gave perch eyes such a distinction as bait, rather than just a "glow" like so many other artificials can create.
