Picking just one thing is a tough choice between spending time with friends, enjoying nature, being away from work, and catching some fish.  If I had to pick just one I'd have to say spending time with friends.

Ice fishing, and it's haunting and haunting;
It's luring me on as of old;
Yet it isn't the fish that I'm wanting
so much as just finding the fish.
It's the ice where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.
"Many fish their entire lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."-Henry David Thoreau

I just love being out there. I suppose my favorite is the first morning pulling into landing and seeing my 2 sons there waiting for me (or me for them) and talking about life we missed while being apart, Second is the first time my wife and I get out. Third will be watching my black labs running around having a ball on the ice and drinking from my hole. Life is good. Ice just makes it a little better.   Steve

The sound of NOTHING when I am the first person on the ice. I know it will all change soon, but for a minute, I own that moment!

For me...at this point in my life it is just spending that kind of quality time with my son. He's 8 (almost 9)and he is a VERY active kid. He plays baseball, football, and is a wrestler...But fishing, and especially ice fishing is his release and his passion. I am a very roud father.

Not knowing what is down there to eat your lure. It just such an exciting feeling to have the reel scream and not knowing what it is until you get it close to the hole.

When you get the first big bend on the rod and realize you hooked something much bigger than you expected....but you don't know what it is yet.

I love that feeling you get when you set the hook on a good fish knowing that you have light line on and it could pop off at any moment .

the smell of the air and the small rod creak and hwol in pain as a pike tries to snap it
Fishing is a sport in which thinking is involved it is the covenant between nature and man, mother and son. Through fishing only can we recreate the link that has been tarnished throughout the existence of the modern era of mankind. Fishing is the answer yet people ignore it and consider it a "stupid" thing to do. What do these people do instead? They stare in front of color changing boxes. Is that life? My life is fishin

I love seeing the first fish come into view on the graph right at the break of dawn while the holes I drilled are still steaming before I flip the lid up on my clam and crank up my heater. Feeling that first fish of the day on my line sure is one great way to get the day going, even if it is just a dink.

Fishing with my dad, who introduced me to this insanity 50 years ago, and watching him ice some nice fish.....
THIS!
My dad started me fishing 21 years ago "once I was finally out of diapers" as he puts it haha.
Nothing better for me than a day of fishing with him.
We live 3 hours apart now and last year he met me in "my area" on the last day of April and we spent the whole day pounding big panfish on multiple lakes. It was my favorite and most memorable day of the 2012-13 ice fishing season!

Being an old timer with 50+ years on the ice, hitting a lake that I haven't been on in a few years, but I still know it. Relatively slow trip but taking decent fish 2 or 3+ times faster than the youthful local experts when they stroll over and ask what I'm doing different. Show and explain in detail the approach and technique, they're puzzled and consider it momentarily, then tell me it's not the established way to catch fish on this lake, it appears I'm going about it wrong. They storm off when another nice fish gets tossed on the ice as they sit back down and glare/mumble at me. Hard to keep from busting out in laughter, only hope they consider the info and give the out side the box approaches a chance one day. We're a helpful bunch by nature but sometimes you need to shake your head and simply laugh a bit at those not yet ready to assess the situation. Truly, predawn through sunup, the anti-cabin fever aspect and actually being able to still get up and enjoy going

Those that don't listen are truly missing out on a great teacher.  I listen to everyone, especially if they are catching and I am watching them get fish.
