How about a thread on pictures of our pride and joy Ice Shacks? Anyone up for it? This could give some ideas to those getting ready to build.

Thank you to all my fellow Veterans

Was that shack on the standish side of slow-bego?

I'm done fishing that slow hole!

I want to go w/Bluefin this year!  He KNOWS where the fish are!

me and my father have built several shacks with that design. they work well but we had 2 problems. they tend to be top heavy and prone to tip in the wind and if you are the guy all the way at the end away from the door , its a pain to have to step over everyone to get out . on the plus side it pulls well behind a sled and then slides right in a reg. pickup bed for transport.

Flagchaser - I am 90% done building one just like your picture and love the design and would encourage you to go with it.  I wanted a shack that would go in the back of my Tundra with the gate closed so I decided on this design.  Even though its base is only 4' X 6', it will seat 6 comfortably!  No other design that would fit in a truck would do that for you. I wish I had a digital camera to show you the particulars but will explain as best possible:  Base 2 X 10 upright runners (skis attached) with 2 X 3's 16" OC covered w/ 1/2" plywood.  Framing - 2 X 4 stripped in half 2' OC.  Side walls up 16" Benches 18" wide  Plywood gussets at every joint.  Total height of side walls 6' 5 /12 pitch to peak.  I think I used 5/8" for the benches.  I have Lexan strips at sitting height for 360 degree viewing. (It did add considerable to overall weigth but it was free)
I covered it with mill cloth, insulated it with 1" foam, and painted it.  Jury is still out to water prooffness (word?)Very ligthweight and free though. I did use a sheet of luan for the door in one gable with a fold up table and shelf at the other gable end.  I probably have 30 hours into, building wise, with a couple more to go.  Not sure of your intentions, but could easily be modified to sleep two quite nicely by adding another 16" strip of plywood with piano hinges the full bench length with hooks to the gable walls.  It does weigth a little more than I would like, probably a good 200 pounds, but I'm guessing 50 pounds is in the lexan so you could do better on the weigth with a little thought.  Cost wise, not sure what you would be looking at to build since I strounged everything but the 2 X 4's.  As far as tippyness, which i don't find it that bad at all with the dimensions I gave you, is easily solved with srew eyes in each corner.  I have built several shacks over the years and think this is the best thing I have come up with by far and can't wait to get it on the ice.  Hope this helps and feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Jacksmelt71 is right about this kind of shack being top heavy. I've had my shack for six years and that was the only problem. The first couple years I had it painted dark green and the heat from the sun would melt the ice and the shack slowly sink in the ice on the sunny side. So I painted it white and stopped the melting, but I have a lot of reflectors on it to make it more visible. My runners are made out of two 2X6 with a 1/2 plywood filler in the middle. I went to Home Depot, where they have metal 2X4, and bought the top plate that 2X4 screw into to cover the runners. The shack moves real easy on these runners. I think the metal 2X4 plate was under $2.00. My brother built his whole shack out of these metal 2X4 and it weigh a 1/3 of what a shack made out of 2X3 wood weigh.

Here's my 4X8:

And here's my tiny shack (4X3) which, when laid on its back, fits in my pickup (which has a cap):

Here it is in the laid down position. I hope to be able to tow it out on the ice by hand like this.

It is a one man shack, meant to help me wait those long cold hours for togue.  Two guys can sit on pails, or a bench to stay warm, but comfort level would be low. Alone in a chair it ain't bad!

Bluefin, the clam 6800 is very easy to put up, I love it. As far as Favre retiring, he is a competitor wheather he wins or loses. He will know when the time is right.

Thanks Billditrite - I think I have the same building affliction as you as, meaning these type of projects are just fun to do just to see what you can come up with.  Sure would have loved those aluminum panels you got, that is the answer!  Like someone else has said on this forum, each one you build gets a little better.  I love just riding the lake in the winter to see what people have come up with for ideas.

Last year, i built an 8'x8' with a 2' overhang on the front for a "porch".  The roof was 8' at its highest point so it was too big to haul in my truck to the ice.  I designed it to be assembled on the ice in 6 seperate panels.  It took less than 1/2 hour to put together with 4 guys.  Worked pretty good. unfortunately, i had no place to keep it over the summer so I completely disassembled it at the end of the season.  Hopefully this year will build another, but better of course!

you learn a little something each time so a little better each time is an easily achievable goal!

i like the porch idea!

One winter, before I die, I'd like to get a camper-shack like that and LIVE out on the lake for 2-3 months!!! Have you guys ever seen the pictures of the shanty villages in the mid-west? they run electricity out on poles that are frozen into the ice... people set up like summer campgrounds...

Man.... I gotta do that once... someday....

Man, what do they use to get that on and off the lake, a skidder? Nice while it's there but I wouldn't want to be the one worrying about how far down in the ice it has sunk.

Favre has been saying he'll know when to quit but I don't think he really recognizes how he is embarrassing himself and hurting his team. He has passed the time to get out with dignity.
