do you use a button on your tip up line?
« on: Feb 20, 2013, 11:37 AM »
so i have always used a button on my tip up line to mark the depth where i have it set.  Does everyone do this?

Anyway, i was just thinking about what a pain it is to slide it up and down the line - especially when i am changing depth a lot and wondered if anybody makes a clip on line marker.

Buttons are much easier than a tiny split shot we used to use. Line only through 2 holes of button... Not much easier than sliding the line to where ya need it. Depths not extremely changing in our waters.

I think buttons are the easiest way of marking depth.  For the most part, depths are fairly consistent so you shouldnt have to move them around too much. Just find a small button with decent sized holes that let the line move freely through it, hold the button with your figers, drop the hook with weight on it in the hole, and let weight do the work. Sure, sometimes they get stuck but most of the time you wont have to do too much to set them right.

I think buttons are the easiest way to mark the depth on polar style tip ups, you just need to reel up the line and the buttons are back to the leaders.  The older style wooden tip ups were a pain especially in 150 or more FOW.  I've seen people use small plastic rings too.

i use the string bobber stops.  the are bright colored and can slide up and down the line like buttons.  I also use the split shots.

I use to use the green bobber stops that are little beads with a red peg that would slide up and down the line, but i cant find them anymore.  I prefered these but like a said a cant find them anymore.
they came in a little bag and the pegs were attached to s strip of plastic.

I have tried buttons (I move my tip ups to often depth wise for that to work), rubber bands, Split Shot (to small to handle with gloves) over hand loops, little bobbers (which floated up and buggers up the line on the spool and they get caught on the side of the hole when fighting fish). For 2 years now I have been using electrical hook clips;

If you get them on ebay they are dirt cheap. They are even easier to move with gloves then a little bobber. They sink slow so if you drop them in a hole you have time to get it back. I have had them freeze a few time, but 5-6 sec. in my mouth and they open right up. I have even wrapped a little glow tape for fishing in low light...

I use buttons.

I can't really think of anything else that works as well as they do.

The only downside is that you can't slide them up and down easily with gloves on, but other than that, I say they are the best choice.

I have some tip-ups with two buttons on them each pre-set for different bodies of water I regularly fish.

Was taught over 30 yrs. ago how to rig a tip-up many different ways, and it always included a button. Works great, why change?

Have always used a twist tie from a bread bag or garbage bag, cut it in half and twist it onto the line. Slides up and down with no problem. The plastic coated ones last for years....

Take a bread tie n cut a piece about 1/2 - 3/4 inch long n twist it on. No resistance when the fish takes it n it's easy to move.
got ice?

I use a 2 hole button.  You can adjust the button easy to the proper depth and  when I am done and reeling in the line, I just hole the button between my index finger and thumb and reel it in to the swivel so I am ready to set the depth at the next hole.

I have always use buttons. They work great but i dont fish to many lakes deeper the 10 to 15 feet. I can see why buttons would be a pain to use in deep water.

I am happy for you if you find that buttons work well for you, but this past weekend I moved tip ups from 16 ft of water to 58ft and then back to 20ft laker fishing... Sunday was so cold that the line would freeze moments after it was out of the hole, making moving a button even more problematic. Then years ago when I tried using button I had a couple break while move them up and down the lines, leavening me to have to remove the terminal tackle to put a new button, something I don't want to do out on the ice. The two button trick is clever, but I like to keep stuff on my line to a minimum and I would worry that on a run the line might catch on the second button...
For me at least, there are many better tools for the job of marking the line then a button...
