Pre Blizzard Walleye
«

I hit the ice on Thursday night in advance of the storm hoping to get into some walleye to break out of the skunk streak I had been on for the last few trips. I had decided to try a new area on the lake since I hadn’t been doing that well this season in my go to spots and after a little scouting I was setup in what looked like a nice area just prior to dark. I had a few bait flags early on and then nothing for a good 7 hours… finally just as I’m starting to think it’s time to accept another skunking and start packing it in for the night the light on my far tip starts flashing. Making my way to the hole I can see that the spool is not spinning but the line is off to the side at a pretty good angle indicating that something had taken the bait and run a bit. As I begin to clear the ice from the hole to remove the tip line slowly starts getting pulled off of the spool. As soon as I am able to clear the tipup from the hole I feel for weight at the end of the line and then set the hook on what felt like a pretty heavy fish. Thinking this might be a decent fish I work to clear any remaining ice from the edges of the hole while keeping pressure on the fish and then once the hole is clear I slowly begin the process of working the fish back towards the hole. It was a pretty amazing site seeing it pass by the hole the first time, even though I figured it was a good sized fish I wasn’t expecting to see something like this. After a few more passes I was able to slowly work the head up into the hole enough to get a finger under its chin to lift it out of the hole. Using a couple of tip ups I was able to get a measurement (32”) and snap a couple of quick pictures before sending it back down the hole.
It was a tough weekend not being able to get back out to try for another one.

Nice nice fish!!! Sweet pic's as well, that must of been a nail biter when it passed the hole and you got a glimpse. I'm glad your hole was big enough to that get baby through. Great job congrats!

Hell of an eye. Beleive it or not word goes around and even though I don't know you I heard about this fish on Friday. Actually I think one of my buddies actually saw your blinky as he was walking out. If you got this fish around midnight than yeah he probably saw you.
I commend you for releasing a fish of a life time. Hopefully you'll get a bigger one now. Im sure I'll see out there some time.

Fishing is a sport in which thinking is involved it is the covenant between nature and man, mother and son. Through fishing only can we recreate the link that has been tarnished throughout the existence of the modern era of mankind. Fishing is the answer yet people ignore it and consider it a "stupid" thing to do. What do these people do instead? They stare in front of color changing boxes. Is that life? My life is fishin

Nice job landing that thing solo and, of course, on the release.
