white  bucktail or feather jig ,large white foxee jig, or  a  white tube jig. My favorite is white and tipped with sculpin, some guys like yellow or chartreuse but white of some kind with sucker, minnow or sculpin has been my fav, Sculpin seem to work better for me jigging and minnows are better for trolling. That has been my  experiance . I also like sculpins because  they hold up much better than minnows. Sucker meat is pretty durable if you leave the skin on. Most lakers seem to be near bottom and  eatin size  have been in 12 -25 ft of water where I have fished.  Might need to go deeper for bigger fish, they have not been my target.

A large minnow dead or alive in the 6-8" range suspended just above bottom in a deep hole 30-60' of water.  Suckers, large creek chubs, golden shiners, smelts  a size 2 circle hook in the back at the dorsal fin.
Checkin traps and making sure there's FRESHBAIT!!!

You are in luck AZW! Just happened to come across this excellent article in this morning's email. Good luck! DIRTBALL2 ;)

The depths of the Great Lakes and the many pristine clear water lakes of Minnesota and Canada harbor a fish that definitely rule the roost when we ice heads start talking about epic battles staged on frozen water, the Lake Trout. These denizens of the deep are known to push above the 40 pound mark and hit lures mimicking their favorite prey like no other of its finned cousins. They are the proverbial freight trains of the icy underworld where many of times they have only left their pursuer with the heartache of another broken rod or straightened hook. But even with this reputation of hard hitting attitudes and relentless strength to spool you to the bottom of the lake time and time again, most anglers are just now getting their first look into what we trout chasers call Lake Trout nirvana. Gearing for these battles has evolved slowly since our first icy encounter with the Lake Trout, but recently due to the growing popularity of the pursuit of Lakers, these evolutions have now come quickly. With that in mind, let's look at what it takes to tackle these fish, allowing us to walk away as victor.

I use a Johnson silver spoon with live bait or white plastic Minnie
and jig,or tip ups with live bait [check the law] set from one ft off bottom to one ft under the ice
hope this helps

White 4-6 inch tube is good for active fish. I have found that a Lindy Flyer jig and a smelt works well for inactive fish. It has a slight gliding motion when jigged that looks good on camera and triggers fish. I have experimented with glow tubes as well and seem to work as well as the white. Can also use a flasher jig head with a small blade attached for flash.

Jig a white tube with a chunk of sucker meat in one hole and sink a spawn sack in the next hole over. If they come in for the jig and are not real aggressive they will usually hit the eggs.

I rig it two ways, one on a 3/8oz football head and one on a 3/8oz darter head.  Been my go to for a couple years now and has produced some great fish! I'm sure most swimbaits would do the trick, but I have had a tremendous amount of success with the X-Zone in particular and I've tried several
