Just wanted to see if anyone has any nifty tricks to secure the hook to the spool of the trap when all done with the trap.  Been struggling with this for thirty plus years though i must admit that i have not put too much effort in coming up with a solution - tried rubber bands once not too much success

I just push the hook in very slightly into the spool of line.  There has got to be a better way tho.

i have Jack Traps (trout traps - standard's and cross) plus some vintage small cross tip ups build by Great Grand Father circa 1930's
i have always done the push the hook in the backing but every third trap the barb gets embedded

yea idk how you would go about doing it on jack traps but maybe put a piece of cork on the wooden part of the tipup and put the hook in the cork

Hopefully the link works:

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202261940/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=velcro&storeId=10051#.UOjkcG9uHKg

These things saved my sanity. Some people use them to corral electrical cords, but they're the perfect size to fit around a tip-up spool. No more tangled traps. When I have my tip-ups set I wrap them around one of the legs that's not in the water so they don't get lost.

I buy a roll  of double sided velcro and a 1/4" grommet kit

cut the double sided velcro to the length to wrap around your spool.  put a 1/4" grommet in one end

put you hook through the grommet then wrap the velcro around it.

Let me know if you need pictures

I save the straps from heads of green or red leaf lettuce from the grocery store.  Its kind of a weak velcro but it does the trick and it's free.  When I am setting up my traps I put the straps on my bucket handle until I need them.

I use the same type of thing that Nosaj uses but I picked mine up @ the taxidermy place in Manchester a couple of years ago and they work awesome no more snags or fraying

2X on this one it's quick and dirty.  Drink wine bottle, cut cork in half use scotch electric 33 tape to tape the cork onto the trap and insert hook when done.  If you store for a long time oil the cork with WD40 or olive oil and the hook will stay fresh for the summer.

I use the rubber band method, but find that they dont last so I use the bands that women use in their hair.  Much stronger and last a long time.

I use hook-n-loop strips (Velcro) from WallyWorld, they have several lengths, I get the longest (around 12") and add a 1/2"(aprox.) split ring to hold the hook, then wrap them around the upright during use so they don't get lost or forgotten.

The new heritage lakers have a cork tab on the outside of the reel. They are great, you can bury the tip of the hook in them and everything stays put.

The older heritage lakers don't, I usually try to push the hook through the little holes that the reel has to secure the hook but usually what happens is some intense cursing on the ice when these older traps all need to get untangled.

I have used velcro, buy the narrow stips and stick them back to back. Womens ponytail things work, but mosty of them are covered with material and catch the hooks. I bought some cork and glued it with waterproof cement onto the spools. The thing I like about this is there is nothing to loose.

I also use velcro the two sided stuff and melt a small hole in the end for the hook.

Super Glue thin slices of cork onto the vertical shaft of a tip-up.  For HT Polar or Beaver Dam style traps glue the cork on the outside of one of the main shafts or on the underside of the horizontal brace between the two shafts.  Works great, no tangles, no trying to remove your hook from braided line backing.
Spell check -- give it a try.

double use of button
when i'm winding up for the day, I'll bring my button close to the swivel. As I wrap line on I'll put the button so no remaining line wraps on it and when I get to the hook I'll place the hook on the spool side (inside)of the button (between the button and line going thru the button) and adjust the button to take slack out of the hook. works awesome.

Wildlife Taxidermy at the Manchester circle sells "Spooleys." Its just Velcro and a plastic part to attach your hook. They aren't cheap, 10.49 for 6, but they are NH made, Epsom, and work well if you don't have the ambition to make your own.

Agree. These are worth the money. The plastic end shields the hook point from the line on the spool.

I use the strips of velcro with an oring on the end. Got them at KTP. I think they were like 10 bucks for six. Well worth it to not have to worry about untangling lines and pulling hooks out of your pack basket ever again  ;)

we all know that when we stick the hook in the line on the spool sometimes we cant get it out due to the barb, i use needle nose pliers to flatten said barb, also makes removing the hook easier from the fish.....

Those barbs are nice when setting the hook though!
