Ice check please. Northern illinois
« on: Dec 26, 2012, 12:58 PM »
looking to fish soon and wondering what ice depth is. Seems that we in illinois are the worst communicating state out there. Can we keep a thread updated?

I live in Fox Lake and have done some walk byes while walking the dogs, Mineola is frozen over but it doesn't appear to be enough ice to me. I will be checking Pistakee tomorrow but it has a history of staying open in areas of current or springs. If the temps stay down, next week may get us out there. I'm not familiar with channel fishing and hesitant to park along subdivision roads, I know some guys do it and I would guess the channels are fairly safe by now. I'll try to check Long Lake tomorrow as well but I'm not sure where anyone can park now without getting ticketed. I'll post any info tomorrow sometime.

I was fishing the T-Channel yesterday on Pistakee Lake.  2 to 2.5 inches.  A little thinner than I'd like, but seemed ok.  A handful of guys were fishing.  I pulled in a few small bluegills.  It looked like others were doing the same.

By the weekend there should be some good ice around in a handful of places.

I agree on the number of reports. However, if you read other states like cheddarville, you have guys posting bad reports and others
b!tch!ng all the time. I guess some feel they need to stretch the true to make up for well, you know where that comment was going.

We are few but honest. It helps to have a handful of guys who go out of their way to check locations and post good honest info. Blu, and Jbird come to mind as well as a handful of others. Thanks Guys

Still a little under the weather here but I did drive by Mineola and saw six to eight guys out there and loads of guys at the south end of Pistakee with scattered guys in the deep water off Oak Park. I might get out there this weekend, will report any finding s then. Long Lake is still open in a majority of areas.

I was out fishing on Pistakee in the deep water off Oak Park yesterday.  I caught maybe 10 fish or so in the three hours I was out there.  A mix of crappie, perch, white bass, and drum.  I was catching them close to the bottom.  Ice was 3+ inches.  Seemed pretty solid to me.
