I've caught them doing both but catching a big lunker on a tip up is fun. I usually have two or three tips up set up for bass I use a 10 pound mono leader with a treble hook and usually a medium sized shiner.

Had great luck with small chubby darters(#3) worked slow close to the bottom or around brush/trees. Thats how I caught the one in my avatar.

They hit on the jig without hesitation. Haven't yet found anything they won't eat. Love watching them come in on the Vex....just barely wobble the jig and then it's just solid!!!!

I've had the opposite from Missoula.  I've had a bugger of a time on jigs getting them to go.  I've found I need to jig like crazy and then just wait letting it sit still.  I don't know if it's the cold water or what but they get very lethargic once the ice roles around.  My experience has been that it's easy to get them in and difficult at best to get a hit.  Maybe you know something I don't though!  I'm all ears ;D

I catch five or so a day on waxies fishing for gills. see bigger ones come in and bite but hard to get a #12 hook to stich in a 2.5 #r. I have caught them on about anything ya put down a hole. Jigging spoons, panny jigs, jighead with a minnowon a tipup, bare hook and chunk of crawler. It would be a challenge for me not to catch one on most days!

I too catch several bass on small jigs while chasing gills.  I have noticed that bass love little-atom nuggies, I think its the anise scent.

I get them a lot on small and medium shiners when tip up fishing for walleye. I get them once in a while on little blue gill jigs. Talk about fun on 2lb test line.

All the ones I caught were on tip-ups with medium to large minnows.

A medium shiner on a #2 circle hook about a foot off the bottom near some kind of structure, on a tipup
That is the sure fire way to catch bass, the livelier the shiner the better

I should not tell this but I take a skirt from a spinner bait and put it about 8 in above the hook. I use a 8 in wire leader so I put it on the top of the leader. Put it up side down so it will spread out. I have done this for the past 4 years and have caught some real nice bass.  Jerry

I use quick strike rigs with med heavy shiners;
http://mob1033.photobucket.com/albums/a417/stripernut1/IMG_1729.jpg?t=1293330567

The quick strike rig make the hook up rate go WAY up and they are hooked in the lips! I use floro leader Mat also.

I have also had great luck the past couple seasons with Salmo Chubby Darter in the small perch color, the only trouble with them has been the small hooks and I have drop some big fish at the hole because of them... This season I place to try some different hooks.
My best bass thru the ice on a tip up was 8.3 lbs, caught in 4 feet of water.

I catch bass on jigs all the time while fishing for bluegills, but I definitely catch bigger bass on tip-ups.  Seems like either way works well, just depends on how big you want the fish to be ;D

I have caught lots of largemouth fishing for panfish with a very small jig and waxie or spikes. It seems like the Bass like to hang around where the good panfishing is. Sure they will hit a minnow when active, but I think the best bet is a small jig and waxie, you can catch them when they are not active as well. My biggest LM Bass 21" I caught on a 1/64 oz jig and a small micro plastic.

Yep, single hook (one point) only when using live bait.  They are a bit unclear on NH F&G about the type of hook you can have on a jig - For Trout/Salmon Lakes they say this - "Single hook with single hook point for bait, or an artificial lure or flies shall be used to take fish through the ice"

I read this as, as long as it is artificial/fly it doesn't matter but wouldn't it just be easier to state the facts either way.

Largemouth Bass = fun to catch, but disgusting to eat... but I guess I might eat one if I couldn't ever catch anything more table worthy like Crappie, Catfish, Perch, Walleye, or Pike.
