Ill put a hunt or medium shiner on any metal i toss as well as my hair jigs. Have fished them both ways and with bait has out fished without bait every time. I toss a lot of tubes and swimbaits though so a lot of my bait turns to chum.

My 3 biggest lakers have all came on Icicles on tip ups, about 20-25í below the Ice, over 90í+ of water. Havenít fished for them in years like that tho. Have since changed to chasing bigger fish through the ice.

There are very few fish larger than a lake trout recorded as record fish in nys. Carp is one and reasonable,  pike are marginal  due to length vs girth.  Muskellunge are possible.
Chinook salmon will never happen again and a striped bass are not resident fish.
Don't leave much else.

Before the great lakes became into play.  The northern pike in question on great GSL and the lake trout from lake placid were the kings of biggest fish.

I was joking re bait use.  I use it occasionally on jackers but most of the lakers I catch are without bait.  Its nice to just jig.  This one ate fine without any bait.

I wonít argue the fact itís nice to just jig. I 100% agree and Infact, I got out of tip up fishing for almost 20 years. Just got back into it last year.

This is like posting a picture of a fish caught at MDB and complaining about people spot burning.  :roflmao:

If you don't want spot burning you can:

1) not post a picture online
2) white out the background
3) not let the DEC post the picture
4) play it off like it's a different reservoir or body of water

RELAX BUBS - this is on you 100%

Never did understand this "spot burning" thing. Whether it be a big fish or a big buck. When I see a picture of a fisherman/women or hunter with a nice fish/deer I think of:
That person must have done his/her homework...
Must have been in the right place at the right time...
Spending a lot of time at what they love..
Or, must be VERY LUCKY.

With the tech that is out there today, there aren't many secret spots left for those that want to find them....h2l

You aren't kidding ....  That whole exchange was painful to read. Post a picture with identifying landmarks and get mad because someone mentions it .....  then call THEM a googan  ::)

Exactly this. I fished on sunday, about 10 yards away from our pages notorious spot burner  :roflmao:, and only caught one fish. He pulled 15 fish out of that hole throughout the day.  I setup over that exact hole the next day and it resulted in... 1 fish.  >:( Just the name of the game sometimes. "Spots" for lakers are as finicky as the fish themselves.
