Lol I'm pretty sure all but one of you flunked the "is it a brookie or a splake" test.

I'm pretty sure those are Splake?  They don't quite look like pure brookies to me.

I was thinking of the same thing. "Splake"

By the way Wyoutdoors... awesome fish!  Jealous!

If you look closely you can kind of see the laker genes coming through in those fish.

I think it is probably the easiest fish to misidentify... brookies and splake.  Apparently biologists even have a tough time with it... because in some cases the two look so darn similar.
I'll try to find it but I've read a couple stories where someone catches a 7-8lb  state record "brookie" and when they do some kind of testing on the fish they find out it is a splake.

Well, I thought they were Splake initially too, but I never have been a trout guy to begin with lol. They were averaging 18"-20" in length. Didn't have a tape with me but they were about as long as my forearm. Being a catch and release day, it really didn't matter to me what they were as it was a BLAST icing these on an ultralight setup with a light drag setting. (Love the sound of a peeling drag!) If the brookie limit is 16, I would have needed to make two trips to pack'em out. Fat and feisty!

Kinkyline, yes that's a PK in it's mouth.  I just may have one or two PK's in my tackle box at any given time.  ;D

That's the new PK gold plated spoon and flutterfish, hot producers most of the early afternoon.

Look like Splake.  Gotta see the tail though.  Deep fork, almost like two separate fins is Mackinaw or Laker.  Square tail is Brook Trout.  Splake are in between.

Pectoral fins look like Splake.  Can's see any halos around any of the spots.  I'm guessing Splake.

I've never seen lakers with red fins like that.  But I agree, they do look like lakers... especially the head shape and patterning.  99% sure they are splake.

I dunno some lakers I've seen have orange fins...but most don't and I don't think any have fins that are that red.... and the black markings on the fin either.  Not trying to be argumentative but they sure look like Splake to me.

The fins are the dead give away it is definitely not a pure lake trout.

The best way to tell is look up what lake they came from and see if you can do it that way.

Splake for sure then, they were biting up here last weekend like crazy, went through a tub of frozen minnows by noon.
