Crappie vs white perch
« on: Feb 08, 2012, 05:37 PM »
Just wondering do they taste the same?  Back in the 60s & 70s my Dad, Brother, & I used to take what seemed like a long boat ride from camp on Gardiners Lake to Second Lake to find White Perch.  We used to catch them by the bucket full.  One day we caught 80+.  It was a real big occasion for us.  All the family,  aunts, uncles, grandparents, would come over for a feed.   Roll 'em in butter then corn meal & fry them up.
I've heard that Crappie are close to the same.

very similar, with the white perch we like to eat them same day or quick they seem to soften, but the texture, taste , and size of fillets are very close . Crappies are near the same , better IMO.

Crappies have much less dark meat, and are less "fishy" tasting than white perch.  The texture is different, too; the meat of crappie is softer, while white perch have a more solid meat once cooked.  I prefer crappie, by far.

Love 'em both. I prefer white perch, because of the firmer meat. Crappie's are a little too "mushy" for me, but with a great flavor, and I know many people prefer Crappies because of the softer meat....You might as well catch a bucketful of both and fry 'em up....

In most other places outside of Maine, yellow perch are the prime eating fish, and white perch are the trash.

Too bad we have that yellow grub in YP here. Probably more folks would be after em. They are one of the top on my list.I take the bigger ones home and toss the ones that are grubby into the bait or compst pile.  WP are too fishy for me . CRAPPIE for me!!!!!!

They tend to be full of yellow grubs up here.  Not just a few like you find in NY where I catch them.  They won't hurt you, but they sure are unappetizing if there are a lot of them.

Some bodies of water they are infested with worms, other areas they are clean. Last Fall the yellows in Pleasant were as clean as a whistle?
For years I wouldn't think of eating one, now they are right along side of the crappie & whites. ;D

I like all three...but I don't like the yellow grubs....I know the grubs can't hurt you after the fish is cooked but I ain't into it...the grubs get into whites and pickerelli too when they are in the water...

Is it true that in general you'll find less grubs in fish caught through the ice?  I mean they must be around it they are around..winter or summer right?.....but it seems to me I don't hardly ever find them in fish I catch in the winter..... and maybe it is just because i fish in different water during the winter than the summer...

Crappie taste Crappy!!  White perch are much better!!!  Much firmer meat and better flavor!  What tops them both is bluegills!!  They are a pain to filet but they are some sweet flavored and worth the effort!!

White perch for me, in the winter they are down right sweet tasting. Some one talked about dark meat in the white perch and in the waters that I get them out of, they are white all the way throw... Different Diet?

Any size to them yellows?

YP Recipe ("Poor Man’s Shrimp”): Try filleting them and cutting into uniform shrimp size pieces. Drop in boiling water -  with old bay if ya have it - for 20 -30 seconds. DO NOT OVER COOK. Chill in ice  water IMMEDIATELY. Serve w/cocktail sauce and the bev. of choice! I’d go for a nice Belgian Ale or a lightly oaked Chardonnay. MG39, Ice Tea?  ;) I never tried this with Crappie, but have tried others. Most fall right apart.  The yp seem to firm right up. Darn Good

A pain to clean? Hmmm I find bluegills are easier to clean than perch...unless you keep bluegills under 7inches then become more difficult ...I'm not the biggest fan of crappie...the texture is mushy but it tastes alright tho

Crappie are better, that's my opinion, But I also like the white perch and sunfish, throw them all together in a fish fry you cant tell them apart.
