Looking for White Perch..PLEASE HELP !
« on: Feb 06, 2012, 07:22 PM »
Hey Folks,

I'm new to this site.  Been lurking for a while and decided to sign up yesterday.

I'm in the Gray / New Gloucester area and am looking to catch some White Perch in the general area with my 6 year old daughter and fishing crazy 4 year old boy.

Anyone care to share a good location in my area ?  Also, any tips ?  Jigging, traps ?  Type of bait ?

Thanks a MILLION in advance for any advice.

There is pretty good parking right at the boat launch, the best fishing is at the north end though.

sabattus is def crazy action, get there early and head north up the lake at least a little ways.  if you find em medium shiners work great and plan one 1 or 2 traps each for the kids.

I am not sure how edible they are, but we caught a bucket full of big white perch on derby day at sabbatus. One of the guys took them home to eat if that helps.

I like whites just as much as crappies. Try to jig them with a tear drop jig and a small piece of worm, has always worked well for me.

THANK YOU ALL, folks for the great suggestions !  I hope I can return the favor and offer some info to you all someday.  Excited for Saturday.  Going to start out at Sabattus and if that doesn't work out then going to try Little Sebago or a few other.

Thanks again !  Have a great week everyone !

If you check the heavy metals rating .You might want to eat the smaller perch from a place other than Sabattus.

Thanks for that.  We're definitely looking for them for grub so I guess I'll have to rethink Sabattus.

I guess I am a greenhorn....never gave water quality for eating much thought.  As a teen in the late 80's early 90's we used to catch a pile of White Perch on Boyd Lake in Milo and eat them for breakfast the next day.  Man what a delicious fish.

Might have to make a road trip !

In case anyone is interested, I found this brochure when doing a search for guidelines on eating Maine fish.

http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/environmental-health/eohp/fish/documents/fishbroch.pdf

Interesting and disappointing !

If one reads the article posted above it states that 95% of Maine lakes  fish are safe to eat. To be extra sure your catch is free from any comtaminates when prepareing your fish Fillet your fish and remove the ventral section where the dark fatty flesh lays this is the area where your heavy metals gather..
