starting trick for snowmobile
« on: Feb 02, 2012, 07:29 PM »
Yesterday i snaped off my recoil rope on my snowmobile, So I thought I would have to wench it on to the trailer to get it fixed. Well I called the local repair guy in Smithfield on bringing it in. He told me I could put a strap around the clutch and start it that way. So I tried it and it started right up. Iam sure most people know this but I did not. What a life saver if your on the lake and its getting dark.

Make sure you wrap it in the right direction, most 2 strokes will start and run backwards.

My older Polaris came with a small nylon tow strap and instructions on how to use it to start the engine. It is a handy skill to learn.

It should explain how to do it in your owners manual. Polaris's have been coming with a strap to do this for years, not sure about other brands.

Everything old is new again.... that is what is so cool about iceshanty. Some of us are so grateful to learn about things that others have known for decades. I fish alone and my first ever snowmobile, a Bravo, has been home for less than an hour. What an incredible bit of information this is. I'll be trying it out in the driveway before I head out on the weekend.

Thanks Iceshanty

I used to have a 1992 Polaris 650 triple that you didn't even need the rope as long as it was warmed up. You could just palm the side of the clutch, give it a quick flip and it would start right up.

Clutch is on the left side. Need to spin it counter-clockwise.

Depends on which way you wrap the strap.

I drag mine to a steep hill and when I get to the top I start pushing fast. When I get it going fast enough I let out the clutch. If it doesn't work the first couple of dozen time I hunt for a steeper hill.

With the lack of snow this year, if I find an old Polaris with bogie wheel suspension, that could be a possibility!! The slides on my 1972 Panther/Puma crossbreed take hell with no snow on the ice. Also the cleated tracks they have slide sideways like they're on ice skates!!  :o

Pegasus,
Both of my road vehicles are standard shift. If the starter fails on either of them AND/OR if the battery gets too low to start the engine, I got a backup plan...  @)
