Granby 2-1
« on: Feb 02, 2012, 12:05 AM »
Fished Granby for the first time this morning.  Pretty slow action by my standards, landed 6 or 7 lakers and lost another 4 or 5.  Most fish were right around 20" except for one, 30" and probably about 10lbs I would say.  Unfortunately my camera batteries froze so I had to settle for the quick cell phone pic.  Quite an effort getting this fish in on the jason mitchell light action rod with 8lb braid with 6lb fluoro leader, took about 15minutes and got spooled three times.  Im amazed I even got the fish up with how lightly it was hooked plus my 6lb leader is getting kinda frayed but it worked.

Ive got a lot of experience with Lakers from fishing Lake George back home in New York.  Last winter I landed one that was 36" and about 18lbs, still not sure why I let it go instead getting it mounted (esp now that I have my own home with lots of room for mounts!).  The lakers in granby behave very similar to the lake trout I am used to fishing back home so a good topo map of granby and im ready to slay.

Good job on letting those bigger Granby lake trout go!  They grow very, very slowly in Granby.  That 36" fish you caught was likely approaching 30 years old, so it takes a long time to replace one that's removed from the system.  Fiberglass reproductions are the way to go these days.  You get the mount and the fish lives to thrill you again another day.

I release all lakers.  I just like to catch them because they are so aggressive and very exciting to fish for with electrontics.  ;D One day ill get a pig mounted but itll be years before I can afford that.

Nice work Tim. Slow but productive day.

If you ever do need a taxidermist, I can hook you up with one of the best up in Longmont.

Great work getting that landed on light line!

Now that had to be an exciting battle. Way to go in landing that brute, Tim. You a created a fond memory.

I've been to the taxidermist shop in Longmont and every time picked the fiberglass mount as the real fish when asked to choose between the two. Reproductions are the only way to go.

Nice fish bro!!!!    AT least you got those big lakers!!   Your  home waters aren't even going to freeze this year!  Guess I don't get to hit your little "secret spot" this year  ;)
