anyone ever just drill sheet metal screws into the bottom of their boots to make creepers instead of buying the crappy overpriced ones?

Yeah, just don't let your other-half catch you walking in the house with them.

I have done that and it works OK kind of like the sandalls for sale and popular now. That arrangement is alright but tends to ice up and not really grip well since all that is acting as traction is the screw head. Some friends got the Kahtoola Micro Spikes and they seem to be a really good creeper but are pricey.

I got the kahtoola's from Santa and they are awesome.  Definitely fit my huge boots way better than yaktrax and the rubber isn't stretched once they're on so i think it will hold up much better.  The little spikes dig in really well, my only complaint is that they are very noisy...so i'm using that as my excuse for barely catching anything on my first two trips this year.

That is what I did a few years ago. I like it because its just enough grip on glare ice but not as god awful loud as most creepers are. It can be tricky when there is a small layer of snow on the ice, but other than that they great. It feels more natural than wearing creepers as well.
