just gave in and bought a new vexilar. honestly i dont even know how to use it. i got the flow of it but i have a couple of questions. what does the gain knob do. and also how do i know the difference between the fish and the bottom? any answers would be AWESOME!

The gain is like your sensitivity....turn it up higher for smaller jigs and/or deeper water.
The correct gain setting is wherever you can just see your jig. If it's up too high, your jig will look huge & the display will probably be cluttered with 'noise'. Too low & you'll lose sight of your bait when you move/jig it.

As far as what is bottom vs. what is a fish....a little practice & you'll know.
Generally, bottom is well defined red band of varying thickness, depending on bottom composition, that doesn't move.
It will remain constant (until you move locations). If you see 'motion' at your bottom mark, it's a bottom hugging fish.

If you bought yours new, it should have 2 videos with it, 1 an instructional video and 2 one from Ice Fishing Today. The instructional video is very good at explaining your questions.

just start playing with it...you cant hurt it and will learn a lot by tooling with it. Thats how i learned on mine ..then read the book when i had time...lol..or you could pop in the dvd that came with it...or go on utube ...lots of how tos on there about vex.
