Hook placement on bait
« on: Dec 26, 2011, 09:49 PM »
Wanted to get some thoughts on both single hook and quick strike rig hook placement on baits hanging from a tipup.
A bad day fishing beats a good day working!!! <///><

I try to balance the bait so it hangs horizontally. I'm planning on experimenting with side hooked and belly up baits right under the ice this year to mimic a dead fish that has floated to the surface. Has anyone tried this and had success?

If you're gonna use live minnows put the hook under the dorsal fin under the spine. Be careful not to spine them or it will paralize and kill them. And dead bait put hook at the base of the head and one under the dorsal fin.

I usually put it just behind the dorsal fin under the spine, seems to make them slightly off balance and keeps them swimming more.

I allways hook live bait in the tail and put the brakes on then when they are runing with it... Usually it impales the corner of their mouth keeping their teeth out of the fight.

on dead i like to balance it out with a nail in the arse so it just hovers with the windlass and on live bait i hook them between the tail and dorsal so they swim away from the hole

i hook my live bait right in front of the dorsal fin, under the spine... shiners seem to stay healthy even after taking them off the hook

i've tried quick stike rigs and just can't seem to get the hang of them.     i keep going back to a single, small treble, down to size 14 hooked in front of the dorsal.   read my post on the yarn blob.   i will never use single hooks until i'm required by law to do so. if and when, i'll go with the smallest fine wire i can, super sharp and still hooked infront of the dorsal. octupus, mustad is always a good reference brand. owner is another brand hard to beat.   good old eagle claws are good.    keep them sharp.

Dead bait-head down, live bait behind dorsal. I think you get better hook ups head down on dead bait
