Icefishing Reel for Walleye
« on: Dec 05, 2011, 11:00 AM »
Hey guys....picking up a Jason Mitchell walleye rod this week and was wondering what type of reel would be a good choice. I was thinking about a Phlueger 4410 Micro Reel. It is more of an UltraLight reel so I am not sure if it will be enough for walleyes or the occasional northern. I am probably going to go with a 6lb flourocarbon and the lakes I fish the average fish are between 16-22 inches...but there is a chance for larger fish. Will be using jigging raps, darters, and buckshots the majority of the time!!

Do you think the 4410 is adequate or should I go a little bigger. Would like to stay under $50 max for sure! If you don't think it will work what would you advise???

Thanks all!!

That may be a tad small, IMO, and it only has 4 bearings. I use a Pflueger President 6720 on my 'eye rods, and it handles them fine.  ;D

tica cetus gv500...  or any of the sz500 ticas
I have 6 ticas and they are by far my favorites... I have a shimano sienna 500 and a couple mitchell avocet 500 silvers and they are ok but the ticas work much better in the cold and have a better drag.

I use the pflueger micro on my walleye rod.  Some might say it's too smalll, but I only use 4 lb test on it.  I rarely catch anything over 20 inches.  I like it

The New for 2012 ICE season Pflueger President 6720 is the reel for you, in my opinion.  I just picked up mine at Cabelas for 50 bucks!  9 ball bearings and instant anti reverse.  Very Nice!!!  **I just noticed The Sportsman's Guide has them for $40!!

And I don't work for either Pflueger or Cabela's.  ;)

I bought 2 a month ago for that price from Sportsman's guide...members got them for $32.99 plus 20 bucks in gift coupons...can't go wrong!!! Note: You can also get this reel with the rubber "paddle" handle, which all my President's have. Much nicer for ice-fishing, IMO. Just specify that in the order (it is listed as a seperate model #)
