« on: Nov 04, 2011, 06:08 PM »
Has anyone seen this rod and reel in person? how well is it made? Is the rod wispy or balanced well? Is the reel spool small or big? and last thing would you buy it. any info would help. I hate buying things i can't look at and touch.
thanks again

I received my 24" UL  Tuesday.  I'm happy with the quality.  Spool seems large for a fly reel.  I figure some 8lb test backing and a spool of 2lb floroice and I'm golden.  I'd buy again.

is the reel basically a center pin reel.....?

Does the line free spool off with just the weight of a jig?

I was considering getting a pair of these in UL and Med.

Will the reel work on other rods I was thinking of putting it on my ST. Croix

I have the 27 inch and I really like the reel.  The drag is very sensitive and I can see how this can be a great dead sticking rod.  The quick tip is just about identical to a jason mitchell meat stick.

Is the reel able to be switched for a right hand retreive?  I have been looking into a fly combo and I think this would be a good "first time" set up.

As ar as reels go I am NOT impressed for the price. Much better reels at a better price availible. Yes it is switchable from left to right. I was very disappointed ater inspecting this set up. I like the rod though. No way its worth 60 bucks.

I went with combo for the sole factor of they set it up and i wanted to try out a fly reel outfit. The quality of reel will be a trial this season and i will give it a work out and the rod is great without a doubt. I did
take it for test and pre-ice i am happy with my purchase.......cant wait!

I bought the 27" combo, and am vey ahppy with the product.  Took it out to a local lake and hammered big crappies all day with it.  If you're using micro jigs, you must pull the line out by hand....no big deal!  The large center arbor on the fly reel assures that you get no line twist, so your jig won't be spinning around down there!!  Fish do not like a spinning jig!!!  All in all, the quality is definitely there..... sorry Stump, it IS worth the $60!!

I already own a quicktip rod and like the feel and action alot. I had a chance to mess around with the straightline reel about a week ago and it seemed like a good enough reel to me. But you fly reel guys now alot more than me about what a good quality fly reel is as I've never used one.

No it is a fly reel

Does the line free spool off with just the weight of a jig?
See above

I was considering getting a pair of these in UL and Med.
There is currently only three sizes, 24″ Ultra-Light,27″ Quick Tip,32″ Quick Tip these are all panfish rods. more info on that can be seen here on these combos http://wp.me/p1kNCF-tI

Will the reel work on other rods I was thinking of putting it on my ST. Croix
Yes they can be used on other rods just like any other reel on the market.

I hope this helps everyone out.

I got to inspect one of these combos down at cabelas and was not to impressed with it at all.  It felt really cheaply made.  I think i will wait a little on these and see how everybody thinks they work.

Just was not what i expected.

I got mine (27" quick tip) from Reeds via ebay.  Something like $54 with free shipping.  All I've done so far is take it out of the box and flip the reel handle around a couple of times.  Seems like a nice rod and the reel feels fine to me.  The true test for me for any reel is how the drag performs.  Nothing worse than a jerky drag, especially when you are sweating it out with 1 or 2 lbs line.
