Lookin good so far. You can get away with 2x4 floor joice 2 foot on center no problem.

Are you going to add in floor JOISTS? Or just put the runners on the bottom of your floor? If no JOISTS, I suggest using Liquid Nails or similar to stiffen it up.

BTW - Don't forget the back door..... so you can be like Dube.  ;) LMAO!!!

Just gonna mount the skis undernieth. Already placed two three inches in from the edges and am seriously contemplating adding a third down the middle. Am gonna definately add a 4x6 across the front to mount the hitch but thinking a third ski would be a good thing. Skis are a 4x6 with a 2x6 on top for extra clearance.

IMO - A 4X6 has no business in a shanty. A cabin maybe. Others will chime in if I am wrong.

What material are your skiis made of?

I think with the amount of weight your going to be dealing with, you will need to hook your hitch directly to your runners. If you hook to the house frame, you risk tearing out a Framing member, been there, done that ! :'(  I used a 2" Solid steel round rod thru my runners to tie on to my old 8x12 "Hotel California" ! Ditto on the 4x6 Dirtofk, Way too much weight !

Skis will be skinned with umhw or puckboard....if theres a difference. Prolly no right or wrong on skid material just overbuilt, underbuilt or just right. If the majority of our lakes up here were polished I would have used 4x4 but we gotta deal with snow on most our lakes.

JMO - But two 4x6 skis would be good enough for a 8x10 shack. I think you will run into trouble with the third ski.  :o There have been alot of people who have learned the hard way on this site, about putting a third ski on and having it freeze in. there is no way to chip that one out.

I have personally have "not" had that problem... but I have seen pictures and heard of people burning their shacks down or ripping them out of the ice.  :nono:

I did see one shack get Completely Demolished once when the owner tried to pull it out ! The guy ran his 1/2 steel cable tow bridle thru the floor joists and bolted it to the opposite end of the shack ! He was advised to put a little pressure on the bridle with his truck and bump it loose with a bar ! NOPE, He decided a good running start would work better, WRONG !! The floor and walls tore off the runners and when it hit the snow, it completely Disintergrated ! :woot: Ya gotta love Drunken foolishness, it's actually Quite Entertaining ! :roflmao:

I bolted a plate to the inside of each ski with a little hanging above the top of the ski. I drilled a hole through the part that stuck up above the ski. I then took a piece of 2 inch angle iron and cut half the anggle off so I had a 2 inch by 3 inch piece of metal sticking from the end of the angle iron. I drilled a hole in it the same size as the hole in the plate. Do this to both skis and angle iron. Now put a bolt through the plates and the angle iron tabs with a couple washers and snug them up. Next after its bolted and everything is tight bend them to meet in the middle about 5-6 feet from the front of the shack. Now you can weld them or bolt them your choice. I welded mine. Once there fastend at the top figure what type of hitch it will go on and bolt or weld the aproprieate hardware on to accept the hitch....Now the most important part. With a third piece of angle iron just in front of where you bolted it to the plates on the skis cut it to fit and bolt or weld it in place...walla perfect A-frame hitch that is stronger than the dickens and WONT put stress on your skis. Very important is to get the third piece close to the plates without hampering and movement......Wish I had a pick but I dont. You can drive to lake louise if you like and take a peek as thats where they both are. Hope this helped

If anyone needs some springs for their hitch tongue, I have 2 bags of them. Heavy duty diesel engine springs. Some are doubles, one inside the other. Free to good home.

Couple setbacks on the build, umhw not comin as easy as I thought and my metal stud supplier has been shunnin me off. Looks like ill have to pony up for the materials. Also blew out the back that put me down for a few days and kenai dipnettin is somethin that must be handled, if not this weekend next for sure. I did get the skis mounted and got a coat of paint over the whole floor. Umhw is definatley next before I start standin walls. Ill post more pics when I make some progress.

Good idea...i was also thinkin about them cheap roll up sleds cut to fit your runners. Plastic barrel material would hold up pretty well I would think.

How are you going to attach them to your skis? I am wondering because you need the thickness to be able to counter sink your screws so they dont drag or catch on everything.

a buddy of mine has a camper that goes in the back of a pick up truck,he converted it to a shack and set it right on the ice.. no runners, nothing...tried to tell him better but he said "its a perm bro,i don't need to slide it anywhere" and i told him.."it will be there permanently alright" long story short he had to take a log chain and wrap it completely around the camper at the base and yank it out.. all the corners are dented and torn up,it wouldn't even fit back into the truck bed all twisted up like that so we had to sludge hammer them in.. it was his first year with it and its a total mess now.. damn shame everyone doesn't just trust that i have all the answers  ;)

Uhmw....5.5"x1/2"x10' = $255.00!! That dosent even complete one ski. Looks like PVC trimboard for my shack. 50 bucks will do both skis.
