« on: Feb 23, 2011, 05:50 PM »
I thread my bait on along the back, i didnt know if other people did theirs differently or if there was any other techniques?  Or is this a foolish question?

I know some folks do it. Never saw the need though.

fishing for trout or salmon i thread them down the back next to the dorsal, bait seems to last all day, better for presentation

I used to do it a similar way, but found it was harder to catch and release the fish.  Plus it took a bit more finesse which is hard to do when it is cold and windy!
The closest flag up may be the one that is behind you !

We just started threading them through the top by the dorsal and we went 11 for 12 on flags which is way better than we usually do.

Don't see the need for it in a tipup application.

I  lace with double 4 or 6 hooks, the hooks sit right behind the head w/the points facing the dorsal fin. Fish eat fish head first -giving you a good hook set as soon as the fish turns and starts to swallow the bait.

When you say lace, do you mean string through the gills??? ???

- Tie leader(I use fireline for lakers) to hooks and attach to needle, run the needle (just under the skin) right behind the head and come out somewhere near the dorsal fin.Pull your leader thru the fish and snug the shanks up under the skin. You probably have to look online to find double hooks these days.Outfishes single set-ups everytime,I've fished both ways and once I started lacing I would not fish any other way for lakers/salmon.

Thanks for the lesson. I have done this before, especially when using large bait or perch. I thought this was just called threading. Thanks again :) :)
