Minnow Trap
« on: Jan 12, 2005, 10:41 AM »
Does anyone have plans to make a minnow trap. I would like to start trapping minnows in our stream to save money. Also, just something to do.
Thanks,
Chuck

I saw one on the Roland Martin show that takes a 3 liter soda bottle (one of the big ones).
You take that, and cut of the screw off tops of  about 3 others (where the caps screw on to) and cut holes in various places on the bottle of the same size, and screw the tops into it. Fill the bottom with small  pebbles so it will sink, and tie a string to the top, it should work well

I tried the firs one myself...it worked well for me, the other looks good too, probably holds less though.

In the town of Fillmore N.Y. they make wire minnow traps that really work well, I think if you stop in there you can get one for just a few bucks or write and order one.   Cuba Specialties Inc.

These minnow traps are sold all over America and Canada.
They might even sell the seconds for next to nothing, i'm not sure.

OK.  Here's my stupid question.

I have an 8" auger, so could drop one of the soda-bottle traps through for a day or two.

Where should I drop a minnow-trap under the ice to catch minnows?  Along weeds?

I made a minnow trap out of the stuff that keeps leaves out of the gutters. I put it all together with old 20lb mono. It woks really well, it cost absolutely nothing, And it's totally collapsible because it has no metal in it.
