Lake Echo (Plymouth) Smelt Help
« on: Feb 04, 2011, 10:58 AM »
Hey All,

Thinking about heading there this weekend to jig some smelt for a little fry..haven't had them in years.

Any advice would be apprciated...location, depth, bait, night or day?

Thanks in Advance!

Go right out in front of the boat launch, favor the road side of the lake and avoid the inlow from Amhearst, ice will be thin over there. Not sure what depth the water is there exactly but there will be other smelters out there I bet. Good luck to you. Lav

I always did better at night... Head out about an hour after dark, walk halfway between the boat launch and the stream from Amhearst. Setup a surface light pointing down, (never had good luck with a submersible), and start jigging spikes 18-24ft under the ice.
Good Luck  ;)

Tip Up !!!

I started a thread a while back on the same subject, same lake.  You got a better responce which is great and I thank all.  Can we use a chum pot to submerge in a hole while smelting.  Obviously I come from Salt water whereby one can do mostly anything.

You'll probaly do better at night. I've fished there every Friday for three weeks and haven't caugt a smelt or any trout. I usually do quite well there. Bout ready to go elsewhere.

Enough ice. Lots of powder on it yesterday. Underneath that is 6 inches of loose ice and water. If you go try somewhere else than off the boat launch. Maybe the drop off the beach could produce who knows. Good luck.
