Best lake would be Lewey Lake in the Adirondacks. You can park at the gate of the Lewey lake campground and walk out. Tons of smelt in there.

I've caught smelt with several methods of baiting lures or fishing plain, but the one that has produced the most for me is half a crappie minnow tipped on a small spoon.  I've heard of other people using s sliver of smelt filet once they get one too.

For more information read my MN nice journal

I have been to Lewey twice now and they were everywhere we tried. Walk out from the campgrounds until u are even with the point on the left then over to the right a little off the snowmobile trail they were there.. Then we went way down by the perm. shanties and they were there. Fun both times caught a bunch both time.. They were anywere from a foot under the ice too a foot off the bottom. After you catch a few from one depth drop down or raise up a few feet and u should get a few more..
