What do you think of this trap?
« on: Dec 17, 2004, 09:28 PM »
This is a set of two ice fishing traps that my neighbor makes

Set up with flag ready to fly

styrofoam insulation to keep the hole from freezing up

pic of one broken down - he puts alot of work into these things.

nice little sled to haul them in

They work real good on a cold and windy day. They keep the snow out and the hole never freezes up.

does he sell those?

Yes, he actually has a patent on them. I think he sells them for about $100.00 per trap, but I'm not sure. He needed a blueprint of his traps and I own a drafting business, so I made drawings of his traps in trade for some. That was 5 -6 years ago. The traps are made from mahogany and do seem too nice to use and they have gotten beat up a little. These are for a 10" hole. He will make them for any size hole you want.

Tell your neighbor he does very nice work. I build furniture in my garage durning the summer mostly as a hobby and have custom built some for relatives. What he is doing even if he has the right tools takes time and a lot of it. I build mostly larger items i.e. gun cabinets, end tables, DR tables, cedar lined oak chests, oak book shelves, entertainment centers, etc. and could probably carve any one of these larger items in the time it takes him to make a pair of those. I thought I invested a lot of time in what I do. He probably has all of $100 invested in labor. Very nice

I'm amazed that he would top off these beautiful traps with a cheap plastic (not a nice metal) spool. ???

Those are something you'll see on the Antiques Roadshow in 75 years!  Beauties!  During the summer you could put them on legs and use them for end tables and the sled for a coffee table.  Very Nice

When a fish hits, how does the trap respond? I love those Polar Tip Ups, very smooth. They look similar.

When the reel spins, so does the top which releases the flag. You can tell if the fish is taking out line by the top spinning or not.

Nice to see craftsmanship is alive and well in this day of buy it, use it, throw it away.  I am sure he gets a kick out of building these which is great.  Hopefully he or somone he sells these to can post "a monster" on this website.

Those traps are beautiful. Almost to the point I wouldn't want to even use them but if I'd be spending $100 a trap they better be getting lots of use.  ;D

I've sen a lot of rigs over the years, but, I've never seen anything as nice as those traps.
There was a lot of creative thinking going into the design.
Very unique and handsome traps.

Hats off to the guy who makes them, $100 each and must be losing money guessing by the amount of work it must take for turn each piece.

You must get a lot of comments on those babies.
