5 or 6" with a vex?
« on: Dec 10, 2010, 02:25 PM »
I know the hole size has been hashed over many times, but haven't really seen much on this. Is a 5" big enough if you are dropping a vex in the hole also? I wanna get a 5 or 6" Lazer for early ice and long walks, but not sure on what size. Just fishing for pannies.

Ive used my vex in a 4.5" hole.  You need to take it out when you have a fish on, but its not a big deal.

Either will work just fine. I have a 6" but often fish out of my buddies / dads 5" without any problems. This will be first year with my own vex but I used to borrow my dads and never had a problem with either size hole.

I switched from a 6" to a 7" two years ago.  It is a little more work but, you dont have to pull your ducer everytime you catch a fish.  I would never want to fish out of a 5" hole.  Then i switch over to my gas auger after 8" of ice so it is not a real big deal

I've been using both the 4" & 5" (Lazer's) with my Vexilar for several years. Occasionally need to lift out the transducer when I ice a fish. You can drill a LOT of holes without getting worn out and stay on the fish all day with thees smaller augers.

Thanks for all the replies. I use a 6" Mora right now for early ice, till I break out the gas auger, but sometimes I'd like to lighten the load a little.(Last year with all the snow, it was a long drag to some of the spots I like to fish. Thinking I might invest in the Lazer, and use it more, if it's that much easier to drill.

fish a 5 inch hole 95% of the time all season long.  Don't have a xex float but I hang the ducer right off the edge of the hole as shallow in the hole as I can and not have clutter.

i have a 6" it works just fine. sometimes i drill 2 holes one for my vex and one for my pole. but in some conditions you can just set the ducer on the top of the ice and i have had that work on thin or clear ice.

just drill two holes close together and then you won't have to remove your cable.

Problem solved.

I have fished both but I downsized to the 5 and it seems to be Ok. Waiting for the thick stuff to bust out the 7"

Waiting for thick ice to go to a bigger auger  ??? seems a little backwards lol

I use a 8", only because I own only an 8" and 10". Works well for me, but I know many that use a 6". Tightlines.

Just make another hole for vex...cutting a 5 or 6 inch hole is cake.

No problems with my 6" Strikemaster Lazer. If it becomes a problem I will take the float off.

I use my vex in a 4.5" hole and it works fine. It's a good habit to remove it from the hole if you get a fish. The thicker the ice gets the worse of a problem it can be. Do your best to keep the transducer as high up as possible (without getting reflections/interference.)
